Hawaii Opera Theatre announces the 2013-14 Opera Season and a special ticket offer

Honolulu, Hawaii - Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT), the Islands' only major operatic company, presents a season of beloved Opera that is sure to spark a sense of nostalgia for audience members of all ages!

"I am very excited about the new HOT season!" Says Henry G. Akina, who has been the General & Artistic Director of Hawaii Opera Theatre since 1996. Akina is highly decorated for his work including honors from Opera America and the National Endowment of Arts and Letters. "The combination of one of Puccini's best-loved Operas with Gilbert & Sullivan's comic masterpiece together with the unique pairing of Pagliacci with one of the world's most well-known choral works is not to be missed!"

Puccini's powerful setting of Gozzi's dramatic fairy-tale opens the Hawaii Opera Theatre 2013-2014 season on October 11, 13, & 15. Set in China, the story revolves around Prince Calaf's attempt to win the hand of Princess Turandot by successfully answering 3 riddles. Will the Prince escape the executioner's axe and melt the heart of his Princess?

Next up we have the rare opportunity to experience both I Pagliacci and Carmina Burana on March 28, 30, & April 1, 2014. Don't miss this opportunity to watch as the clown wreaks vengeance in Leoncavallo's satire, Pagliacci, a tale of love, jealousy and death! Then witness Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, a collection of raunchy songs from a Benedictine monastery, transformed and presented as it was originally conceived, on stage.

The final installment of HOT's Opera Season is Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado on June 13-15 & 20-22, 2014. Enjoy the series of hilarious events, as Nanki-Poo, the son of The Mikado, tries to escape an arranged marriage and finds new love along the way. Although set in Japan, this enchanting work brings together worlds in only the way the opera can, as the story makes fun of English society and mores of the time.

Single Tickets for each performance will be available to the public starting on August 1, accompanied by a very special offer of 50% off the regular price of admission. This promotion will run through August 4.

HOT delivers this score of a deal while also launching a newly redesigned website, which also goes live on August 1.

To purchase tickets, visit www.HawaiiOpera.org, or call the Box Office at 808-596-7858.

Welcome to HOT (Hawaii Opera Theatre)

Opera has been part of island culture for more than a century. Its history in Hawaii, which dates back to the 1850s, includes stories of Queen Emma singing in the chorus of Verdi's Il Trovatore while her husband, King Kamehameha IV served as the stage manager! Queen Liliuokalani is said to have composed her own opera. Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT) was established as a non-profit organization in 1960.

Today, HOT is known for its vibrant and creative productions. Artistic excellence continues to be the cornerstone of standards for the company. International artists, who have graced stages from the New York Met to opera houses throughout Europe and Asia, compete up to three years in advance to perform on the HOT stage along side Hawaii's best local artists. With its recent commemoration of 50 years as Hawaii's only professional opera company, HOT is one of the largest performing arts organizations in the state with performances and outreach presentations on all of the major islands.
