The Mendonca Building's Courtyard will be
open in October with the usual music, local art and jewels in conjunction with
Chinatown Loft tenants upstairs. Come through the Bamboo Courtyard Gate or go
directly to the Second Floor through two choices: the Smith Street door or up
the red Courtyard stairs to meet our new artists and view scheduled performances
upstairs in 202, 203, 205, 209 and 215 among others.
ROSE
WOLFE and her merry band of UH costume designers will be back offering their
“Costumes in the Courtyard” with plenty of new items. On the Rack
will be Vintage Clothing and accessories with a special selection for HALLOWEEN!
OTIS SCHAPER will be providing his usual mix of contemporary
and popular guitar styling will be provided in his usual place after several
months’ absence. He offers many original sons, some created just for his
daughter. You may have heard him play with The Strangers at Jimmy
Buffet's in Waikiki or the Pipeline Café.
JULES SCHAPER, his wife, will return from recent Mainland travels
and will be hanging her latest works on the brick. Her paintings are primarily
of a Hawaiian theme and give the appearance of batik on rice paper. Additional
work of hers can be seen on Printscapes.com.
ART
NAKANISHI will also be returning to the Courtyard this month with 20
original acrylic paintings. He has been primarily a ceramist for the past 23
years, with works exhibited at Tropical Clay in Ward Center. Most of his
“pinchpot” vases are meant for ikebana & chabana arrangements
while his wood sculptures have the wabisabi feel. His art training began at
the Academy of Arts, where his father was a long time member. He continued with
art studies at UH Manoa, concentrating on sculpture. He was in Japan doing
further studies when he “fell” into ceramics and currently he is
working with acrylics on canvas.
ALESSANDRA JANN-JORDAN returns as well in October.
“Reverie by Alessandra” (previously known as Long Lost Treasures) is
an individually run hand crafted jewelry and cards business based out of
Honolulu. Every jewelry design is hand made using semi-precious stones, fresh
water pearls, Swarovski crystallized elements, vintage coral, a variety of
metals, and hand glass blown beads – all collected from the
designer’s travels around the world. The greeting cards are created with
layers of beautiful hand crafted papers, originating from countries as
Korea, France and Italy. The cards are one of a kind and irreproducible, as the
vintage elements used to decorate them are unique, recycled and
often antique. Both jewelry and cards can be custom made and
tailored to the client's specifications for such events as weddings, birthdays
and anniversaries. She loves the creative process, and takes pride
in her customer’s satisfaction and enjoyment of her
products.
SHAYNE TURNER, will be offering her unique jewelry that she calls Grand
Strands. Crafted individually and by hand in the Windward Temple Valley, each
unique piece celebrates many of nature’s own creations, reflecting places
and colors of our Islands.
DONNA BROWN of "Raising Cane" will feature her Polynesian Pendants. Donna, a graphic artist, used to create art work for Local Motion. She now has a line of ceramic pendants called Pasifika.
TINA YOUNG will be back from a Mainland tour at her table offering her special homemade Luscious Lanikai jams and Jellies. Featured will be Mango and Mountain Apple.
Entry to the venue is either on Maunakea Street or Smith Street through the Bamboo into the Courtyard. This event is free and open to the public.
