The Mendonca Building's Courtyard will be open for April Fools Day.... But without any April Fools jokes!   Featured will be handmade quilts and fine jewelry by local artists.

CELIA FRASIER:  Born and raised on Maui's North Shore in plantation times, Celia was surrounded with the vibrancy of Hawaii's beauty and the "Lucky come Hawaii!!" attitude of immigrants.  Anyone seeing the body of her work...quilts, wall hangings, table runners...is struck by just that:  vibrant color and movement which often showcase Hawaiian and Asian fabrics and aspects of the Hawaiian life she loves.

Selling at craft fairs, first on Maui and currently on Oahu, allows her to show prospective clients her workmanship and invite them to commission what they need in exactly the size and colors they want.  You can also check out her work on her website:  celiasquiltsmaui.com.

STUDIOBIJOUXHAWAII will be represented by owners, Bill and Kihwa with a sample of work from their studio in Kaimuki.  They are also known for their Open Studio and Children’s jewelry classes.   Kihwa was raised in Kyung Ju, South Korea, renowned for the beauty of the jewelry it produced.  Growing up in this environment, KiHwa was heavily influenced by these treasures from the past.  She moved to Japan and graduated from the prestigious Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry.   Determined to learn more, KiHwa made the move to the United States to continue her study of gemology in San Diego and eventually to Hawaii.

NILMA HUNTER Originally from Brazil, Nilma discovered her love for jewelry designing about 4 years ago; she quit her job of 12 years in a hotel on the North Shore and dedicated her time to this new love. Self taught and motivated by Phil 4:13, she designs and handcrafts unique ocean inspired pieces with mostly earth friendly silver (reclaimed from old electronic equipment and other resources) and other sustainable mediums such as sea glass and shells found on beaches and Golden Grass (naturally recurring in the central area of Brazil). She also tries to keep the crochet and knit art her mother taught her alive in her jewelry using thin wire to create one of a kind pieces. Nilma enjoys de challenge of custom orders, giving you the opportunity to design your own piece. Her most popular item is her inspirational words stamped discs, which are also customizable.  Finger printing on silver is a great way to keep your loved ones near your heart, stop by her table to check it out! You can also find out more on www.nilmahuntercreations.com.

ALESSANDRA JANN-JORDAN:  Long Lost Treasures is an individually run hand crafted jewelry and cards business based on Oahu, Hawaii. Every jewelry design is hand made using semi-precious stones, fresh water pearls, Swarovski crystallized elements, vintage coral, a variety of metals, and hand glass blown beads – all collected from the designer’s travels around the world. The greeting cards are created with layers of beautiful hand crafted papers, originating from countries as Korea, France and Italy. The cards are one of a kind and irreproducible, as the vintage elements used to decorate them are unique, recycled and often antique.

Not to be disappointed if you are looking for good food, you will find ELGIN ONAGA in the Courtyard Gate.  He will be offering his North Shore ISLAND KABOBS for sale all evening.  Along with meat and chicken, he has a veggie version as well.

FRED GAYAGAS will return for First Friday with his mix of Hawaiian and contemporary music.  He welcomes you to participate with a spontaneous hula if you are so inclined.    His music will be wafting from the upstairs windows.  Look up!

“Resident artists” KRIS GOTO and CHEYNE GALLARDE will be upstairs in the Chinatown Artist Lofts, and will have their studios open for a look at their newest creations.

The actual Courtyard and the Maunakea doors will be closed due to construction, but the 2nd floor will be open for viewing.  Enter the Smith Street door and continue upstairs to the Lofts.   Our large display will be in the room at the top of the stairs.   This event is free and open to the public.
