HawaiÔi Driver's Licenses, Id Card S Need To Be Renewed By Oct. 4, 2021
Hawai‘i driver's licenses, ID cards need to be renewed by Oct. 4, 2021
O‘ahu residents carrying expired Hawai‘i driver's licenses, identification cards or learner's permits have until Monday to renew.
The COVID-19 pandemic-related waiver on expiration dates for these credentials will end on Oct. 4 at 11:59 p.m.
Meaning, driver's licenses, state identification cards or learner's permits that expired during the emergency period -- from March 16, 2020 to Oct. 4, 2021 -- will no longer be authorized for use in the City and County of Honolulu.
"If you're holding an expired driver's license after Oct. 4, you should not be driving," said Department of Customer Services Director Nola Miyasaki, whose oversight responsibilities include driver licensing centers and satellite city halls in the City and County of Honolulu. "It's important to update your credentials as soon as possible to avoid paying any fees, or having to start the process over for obtaining a driver's license or state identification card."
Since the emergency period began in March 2020, fewer than 50,000 driver's licenses and learner's permits in the City and County of Honolulu remain expired and have not been renewed.
Residents carrying expired driver's licenses and learner's permits face penalties, depending on how long they wait to renew.
To make an appointment to update an expired driver's license or state identification card, go to www.AlohaQ.org.
Stand-by service is available to customers who cannot get an appointment at a driver licensing center or satellite city hall, but same-day service is not guaranteed. Stand-by service is offered to offset customer cancellations and an estimated 30 percent no-show rate.
To further meet demand, driver licensing centers have extended hours, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Select satellite city halls are also open for Saturday appointments to renew driver's licenses, state identification cards, and learner's permits.
