“Creative Micronesia” celebrations at Hawaiʻi State Art Museum include art exhibit, family-friendly events during August 2026

HONOLULU - The Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) announces “Creative Micronesia”, a program of upcoming events and an exhibit at Capitol Modern: the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. The Creative Micronesia program is a partnership with the The Medical-Legal Partnership for Children, Hawai‘i William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa; the East-West Center Arts Program; the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Micronesian community groups.

Exhibit: Arts of Oceania

Ground floor display case from August 7 – October 1, 2026 will feature newly acquired Micronesian and Melanesian artwork from the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection, alongside Māori wind instruments and traditional weapons by Kalama Fallau.

Events: Music, Movement, Poetry and Fashion

Join us for a series of events showcasing cultures from across the islands of Micronesia. Events include hands-on art activities for keiki, traditional and contemporary fashion and performances, and poetry.
Performances (dance, fashion, poetry)

Saturday, August 8 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Free, all ages welcome

•   opening protocol by the youth of Pacific Voices

•   Traditional and contemporary dance performances representing various Micronesian islands

•   Fashion show featuring Micronesian skirts modeled by members of the Micronesian community

•   Poetry inspired by Micronesian skirts, performed by Hawaiʻi-based Pacific Islander poets
Super Saturday family day with music, art activities, and marketplace.

Saturday, August 15 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Free, all ages welcome

•   Hands-on art activities with Micronesian and Pacific Islands artists Kalany Omengkar, Carol Ann Carl, Gillian Dueñas, Mary Hattori, Philios Uruman, and Anthony Watson. Family-friendly activities include coconut frond weaving, printmaking, drawing/coloring, and poetry

•   Music of Micronesia by Xavier Fethal

•   Vendors selling Micronesian islands-inspired jewelry, apparel, lei, art, and more

•   Nui Kealoha will be open in the cafe during the event
Fashion show, poetry, and dance

Saturday, August 22 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. 
Free, all ages welcome

•   Fashion show featuring traditional attire presented by the Chuuk Language and Cultural Association and contemporary apparel designed by Kalany Omengkar and Manny Crisostomo

•   Poetry featuring Hawaiʻi-based Micronesian poets

•   Traditional and contemporary dance performances

OUR MISSION
To promote, perpetuate, preserve and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawai`i. HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
