This exhibition celebrates the activities of Garakutashu, a society of collectors and hobbyists active in Japan from the 1920s through the 1940s. In its heyday Garakutashu had up to nearly three hundred members and was open to anyone with a passion for collecting, regardless of status, faith, nationality, or gender. Established at a time of international modernist art and folk-art movements, which made a virtue of the unconventional, the network stands out for its love of the ordinary. Members accumulated and created all manner of objects, not just artworks and fine crafts, but also memorabilia, curios, and bric-a-brac, and similar items others might overlook or even deem worthless. Garakutashu is an under-looked but fascinating chapter in the history of art, play, and internationalism in Japan before World War II.
