 Discover the Joy of Oil Painting with Alla Parsons

Downtown Art Center Second Floor

This class is for all levels, but will specifically address beginners, covering the fundamentals of oil painting. Students do not need any prior experience with painting of any kind; however, intermediate and advanced students may learn something new as well. This class will repeat, covering a variety of topics, so students may re-take this class to continue learning. Composition and use of color will be two major focus points.

Introduction to Acrylics through Abstract Art with Marina Borovok

In this course, you will learn how to paint with more freedom, be more expressive and spontaneous. By the end of the course, you will be able to apply art design fundamentals to your abstract painting, loosen up your painting style, and enjoy the freedom of abstract painting. Concepts of shape, value, color, edges, and center of interest in abstract art will be covered. Discover the laws of abstract geometry and contrast to create expressive, nonfigurative compositions and enjoy painting as you never did before.

Limited Workshop Series with Esther Nowell

A special series of four afternoon workshops with versatile 102-year-old painter, collage artist, and ceramicist Esther Nowell. 

Doodling with Esther: 
Date and time: Wednesday, January 11 from 1-3:30 p.m.

Don’t know how to start making art? 102-year-old artist Esther Nowell will introduce you to the vast variety of possibilities! Forget being serious and learn how to play!
 
Collage with Esther: 
Date and time: Wednesday, January 18 from 1-3:30 p.m.
Tuition: $30

Use any materials you can think of to make a fun collage in this workshop by 102-year-old artist Esther Nowell. Patterned papers, combining shapes, colors and material – your work of art can be as real or abstract as you want. Be open to experimenting, and try everything! Bring your own materials or share with the class.
 
Making Sketchbooks with Esther: 
Date and time: Wednesday, January 25 from 1-3:30 p.m.
Tuition: $30

Everyone needs a sketch book!
Anything can be put into it. You are free to collect whatever you please in your sketch book: lists or ideas, things to do, things you’ve seen, and things that inspire you. You can use pens or watercolor, collage, souvenirs or found objects. It is yours. No rules, just enjoy. Bring your own materials or share with the class.
 
Zentangle with Esther: 
Date and time: Wednesday, February 1 from 1-3:30 p.m.
Tuition: $30

Learn the art of disciplined doodling, in this workshop by 102-year-old artist Esther Nowell. Learn patterns, invent your own patterns, or combine patterns to create interesting effects. Use different media in black and white, like ink or markers, or add color with watercolor and other paints. Enjoy!

Emerging Artists for Grades K-2 with Fae Yamaguchi 
7 Saturday sessions: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
January 21, 28; February 4, 11, 18, 25; March 4.
Instructor: Fae Yamaguchi

Classes limited to 12 students

This class is designed to explore the creative artist in each student. Young people will create 2D and 3D artworks in different mediums, such as painting, printmaking, clay, fiber and mixed media. Students will be encouraged to experiment and will have the freedom to express themselves in a safe and fun environment.

Creativity Takes Courage! -Matisse

Students will engage in drawing and painting exploration that will inspire them to learn about Kandinsky, Thiébaud, Jackson Pollock, Matisse, and other famous artists, as well as finding the creative artist within. Using the tools and techniques of charcoal, pastel, pens and paint media, students will improve their skills and free their artistic expression.
