“Art in the Capitol” for State Legislators
As a part of the State Legislature’s Art at the Capitol event, SFCA hosted a hands-on art making “Art in the Capitol” workshop with legislators and legislative staff. SFCA has hosted these workshops for the past few years as an opportunity for legislators to experience the high-quality arts education programs SFCA provides to Hawaiʻi public and charter school students and teachers.
This year’s workshop was “Poetic Self Portrait as Fresh Water” with SFCA Artistic Teaching Partner Laurel Nakanishi, combining image making with poetry writing.
Participants included Rep. Cedric Gates, Sen. Decoite, Sen Fevella, Sen. Keith Gil-Agaran, Sen. Sharon Moriwaki, Rep. Stacelynn Eli, Hawaii Council for the Humanities Executive Director Aiko Yamashiro and staff member Lyz Soto.
Art at the Capitol Event is scheduled for April 1, 4:00-7:00pm. The State Art Museum’s First Friday is on the same evening, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., and the SFCA recommends visitors attend both events.
Laurel has a series of video lessons for the SFCA Artists in the Schools program, available online: https://sfca.hawaii.gov/arts-education-programs/artists-in-the-schools/ (scroll to bottom of the page).

Artists in the Schools

“Amidst the ever-changing learning environments, we have been privileged to participate in the Artist in the Schools Program for the past seven years. Our teaching artists provided a two- week-long art residency for students in 2nd and 3rd grade. Students experienced a connected series of drama experiences that helped deepen comprehension when reading and/or listening to texts read aloud. Our mentor texts were Akua Manō o Mauna Lahilahi, Pōkaʻi and Kāneʻīlio, The Magic Whistle, and Puhinalo and the Great Fire. These mentor texts gave voice, body, and life to the stories of our Waiʻanae moku. All lessons were connected to common core standards and provided engaging activities where students worked in groups to discuss solutions to posed questions or challenges. The residency allowed for 100% participation from students versus more traditional strategies where only those eager to raise their hands participate in coming up with the answers. We look forward to continued participation in the Artist in the Schools Program in hopes of building upon the previous years’ teaching and learning.” - Kanoe Cadina, Curriculum Specialist at Kamaile Academy Public Charter School

“The Hawaii Triennial Offers a New Way to Experience Paradise”
“Issues of Hawaii specifically are addressed throughout the triennial. At the Hawaii State Art Museum, the documentary work of video production team Joan Lander and
Puhipau (known collectively as Maka o ka ʻĀina), which addresses topics including land rights and the Hawaiian sovereignty movement, is screening alongside unreleased archival footage. Nearby, the work of Hawaiian publishing outfit ʻElepaio Press, co-founded in 1976 by brothers Richard and Mark Hamasaki, is presented in an exhibition that celebrates the beauty of printed products and calls to mind earlier eras of struggles still being waged today.” Read the full article online: TownAndCountryMag.com/leisure/arts-and-culture/a39410322/hawaii-triennial-honolulu-art-2022/
