  • Downtown Art Center Welcomes The Revival Of Honolulu's Ômonday Night Life Drawing Group' Starting Monday, March 14, 2022

DOWNTOWN ART CENTER WELCOMES THE REVIVAL OF HONOLULU’S ‘MONDAY NIGHT LIFE DRAWING GROUP’ STARTING MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2022

Honolulu (February 2022) –Downtown Art Center at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave., Second Floor, in Honolulu's historic Chinatown Gateway Plaza, is thrilled to host the revival of Monday Night Life Drawing Group, an artist-run uninstructed life drawing group that has been meeting for many years in different venues around O’ahu. The first occurrence of this weekly event will be on Monday, March 14, from 6-8:30 p.m. Cost per artist attending is $15. To sign up and reserve your spot for these limited-seating sessions, please contact Jared Wickware at jaredwick@hawaii.rr.com, and provide first and last name, email and phone number.

The roots of the Monday Night Life Drawing Group go all the way back to 1988. The tradition began with respected local artists Mark Brown and Marijcke Christianson, who attended weekly life drawing sessions hosted by Kapiolani Community College art professor Noreen Naughton.

Later, the sessions moved to Chaminade University, where an artistic community was formed around its positive energy, great models, and contemporary music, with such local art world names as Hon Chew Hee, Pegge Hopper, John Young, Jerry Mayfield and his partner Paula Rath, editorial cartoonist Dick Adair, interior designer Jack Adams, James Rumford of Manoa Press, and Doug Simonson, author of “Pidgin to da Max,” dropping in to participate. The group, led by Mark Brown, Marijcke Christianson, Walter Takeda, Joe Zimmerman, Dexter Doi and Jared Wickware, met from 1988 to 2014 in Eiben Hall at Chaminade, then later moved to the Honolulu Museum of Art School, where it continued until being put on hold by the pandemic.

The weekly event, characterized by live models, music, and a creative atmosphere, will be held Monday evenings in Downtown Art Center’s Performance Space. For more information about the group and sessions and to reserve a spot (seating is limited) contact Jared Wickware at jaredwick@hawaii.rr.com.

In collaboration with the Monday Night Life Drawing Group, Downtown Art Center also plans a 4-day Figure Drawing Popup showcase, opening on Tuesday, May 31 and culminating on First Friday, June 3, 2022. The invitational pop-up will feature unframed original figure drawing artwork by more than 20 local artists.
