MARCH 2022

Hawaiʻi Triennial
The Hawaiʻi State Art Museum’s Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022 (HT22) display features Kānaka ʻŌiwi and Hawai‘i-based artist collaborations ‘Ai Pōkahu Press, ʻElepaio Press, Nā Maka o ka ʻĀina, Piliāmoʻo, and Tropic Editions. “The exhibition at HiSAM celebrates the particularities of this place and is indebted to the stories of art and activism that have unfolded across Ka Paeʻāina o Hawaiʻi since the 1970s—many of which remain under recognized to this day. It is no secret that ʻŌiwi artists have been historically underrepresented and misrepresented within the settler colonial exhibitionary complex of Hawaiʻi’s art institutions,” says Associate Curator Drew Kahu‘āina Broderick. “HT22 seeks to counter exclusionary practices that continue to impact the health and well-being of Hawaiʻi’s art ecosystems.”

The eleven-week event is organized by Hawai‘i Contemporary, a Honolulu-based nonprofit organization, and made possible by presenting sponsors Hawai‘i State Art Museum, supported by State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and MakeVisible, a nonprofit whose mission is to create and sponsor innovative platforms for artists. HT22 is a citywide art exhibition of contemporary art installed across seven venues in Honolulu: Bishop Museum, Foster Botanical Garden, Hawaii Theatre Center, Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM), Iolani Palace, Honolulu Museum of Art, and Royal Hawaiian Center. Admission to the Triennial exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum is free.
For more information about the Hawaiʻi Triennial, please visit the Hawaiʻi Contemporary website:

Artists in the Schools

“Amidst the ever-changing learning environments, we have been privileged to participate in the Artist in the Schools Program for the past seven years. Our teaching artists provided a two- week-long art residency for students in 2nd and 3rd grade. Students experienced a connected series of drama experiences that helped deepen comprehension when reading and/or listening to texts read aloud. Our mentor texts were Akua Manō o Mauna Lahilahi, Pōkaʻi and Kāneʻīlio, The Magic Whistle, and Puhinalo and the Great Fire. These mentor texts gave voice, body, and life to the stories of our Waiʻanae moku. All lessons were connected to common core standards and provided engaging activities where students worked in groups to discuss solutions to posed questions or challenges. The residency allowed for 100% participation from students versus more traditional strategies where only those eager to raise their hands participate in coming up with the answers. We look forward to continued participation in the Artist in the Schools Program in hopes of building upon the previous years’ teaching and learning.” - Kanoe Cadina, Curriculum Specialist at Kamaile Academy Public Charter School

Get the arts in your classroom!
The SFCA is accepting Artists in the Schools (AITS) grant applications for the 2022-2023 school year. All public and public charter schools in the State of Hawaiʻi are eligible to apply for one AITS grant per school for artist residencies to be conducted during the 2022-2023 school year. AITS grants are meant to enhance a school’s fine arts curriculum, not supplant it. Application must be completed through the GO Smart online application system at Hawaii.GoSmart.org. The application is due via the GO Smart online application system no later than Friday April 3, 2022 at 11:59 pm HST.

2022 Young Artists of Hawaiʻi
This year’s theme, “what does good leadership look like?”, is an exploration of the qualities of good leadership, how good leaders impact our communities, and who these good leaders are in our families, classrooms, schools, local neighborhoods, and global community. Through the incorporation of suggested classroom discussions and literature, students will be able to submit a piece of artwork to the 2022 Young Artists of Hawai‘i competition that captures these discoveries pertaining to the theme.
Submissions are due April 1, 2022. Please help us get the word out to schools, teachers, and students! All Hawaiʻi public, charter, and private school students grades K-6 are eligible.

Moanalua Gardens Foundation
“SFCA American Rescue Plan funds enabled Moanalua Gardens Foundation (MGF) to continue our 52-year tradition of preserving and perpetuating the history, native culture, and environment of Hawaiʻi through education and celebration of the Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival. Having a stable staff allowed us to direct our limited resources to film a second virtual Festival, the 44th Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival, featuring heartwarming messages of aloha from each kumu hula.
The
virtual 44th Annual Prince Lot Hula Festival reached over 222,600 viewers in Hawaiʻi, 3,000 more internationally via live stream, and another 10,000 and still growing around-the-world via our social media venues. Nationally, our program exposure and publicity reached over 3 million people and garnered over 1.6 million unique visitors online. Total calculated publicity value exceeded 5.7 million dollars.” – Moanalua Gardens Foundation

The Hawaiʻi Triennial 2022 Takes Over HiSAM’s Exhibition Spaces Through May 8
“[Hawaiʻi State Art Museum’s] partnership with the nonprofit organizer Hawaiʻi Contemporary has grown stronger in recent years with shared goals within their respective organizations. HiSAM’s Executive Director Karen Ewald says, “We started talking with the organizers a few years ago and took part in the Art Summit in 2021. We found that we had the same intention and priorities in serving the arts community as they did.” Ewald was grateful for this opportunity to collaborate. “We were able to give our museum exhibition space as well as funding to help bring their vision to a reality. Our intention is to continue the partnership with the Hawai‘i Triennial and to keep the momentum going.”
HiSAM is a part of the SFCA’s
