Free swim returning to City park pools in March!

Availability of pools, programs offered dependent on staffing, pool conditions

O‘AHU -- Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) are pleased to announce the return of free swim at City park pools beginning this March!

Like most public facilities, City park pools experienced intermittent closures in 2020 due to the fluctuating pandemic circumstances. In September 2020 the pools reopened for lap swimming only, and since then DPR has kept these pools open while modifying operations based on COVID-19 mitigation policies. With the return of this less formal pool usage, allowing for closer contact, all regular pool activities are now allowed at City park pools.

City park pools will be offering free swim based on the availability of staffing (particularly pool lifeguards) and pool conditions. For more information about pool locations and staff contact information for pool scheduling please visit bit.ly/OahuPools

DPR continues to recruit part-time lifeguards in order to expand the availability of these pool facilities for safe public usage. These fantastic jobs are open for residents 16 years and older, with a starting pay of $16.25, working outdoors with some amazing people!

All lifeguard applicants must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate. To assist with making this certification readily available, DPR continues to partner with the American Red Cross, offering pool lifeguard certification courses at City park pools. Upcoming certification courses include:

  • March 14 through March 19 at Makakilo Neighborhood Park's pool . If interested, please contact Justin Delfin at 808-768-6115.
  • April 10 through April 22 starting at the Waikele Community Park pool before progressing to the K. Mark Takai Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center. If interested, please contact Kerry Terukina at 808-768-3039.

Currently, several pool locations remain closed including at: Waipahū, Pearl City, Waialua, with intermittent closures at Pālolo Valley district parks. However, the Waipahū Pool is scheduled to reopen this summer, and the pool in Waialua is expected to reopen by the end of March 2022, based on pool lifeguard staffing. If you are interested in working as a lifeguard at the Waialua District Park pool, please call staff at (808) 637-9721. For lifeguard openings at other pools, please contact staff at the pool where you are interested in working. Contact information is available at the City park pool website bit.ly/OahuPools

We appreciate the patience and understanding of pool users as we transition back to these regular pool activities, with some of these pools continuing to remain unavailable.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service, other accommodations due to a disability, or an interpreter for a language other than English in reference to this announcement, please contact the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation at (808) 768-3003 on weekdays from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. or email parks@honolulu.gov
