Parking lot improvements reducing flooding conditions at Mākaha Beach Park

Project will require closure of the lot during the weekdays from Feb. 21 through March 4, weather dependent

O‘AHU -- Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) are pleased to announce the beginning of a drainage improvement project designed to reduce flooding conditions at Mākaha Beach Park.

The work is scheduled to begin next week, focusing on the mauka, paved parking lot including: grading, repaving, concrete curbing, sewer extensions, other additional drainage features, and installing protections for the improved drainage system such as a parking island and bollards. Previously, drainage issues resulted in flooding near the sidewalk, comfort station, and park's septic tank.

The work will be conducted on weekdays and is being phased to accommodate permitted events and regular park users, including the 45th Annual Buffalo's Big Board Surfing Classic and local wa‘a clubs.

The contracted project begins with paving efforts from Monday, Feb. 21 (Presidents' Day) through Friday, Feb. 25, and concludes with the concrete work from Monday, Feb. 28 through Friday, March 4. This schedule is weather dependent and is subject to change. However, work will not be conducted on the weekends.

During the weekday work, the parking lot will be closed and the public should anticipate closure of the comfort station (bathroom building). We appreciate the patience of the community while these facilities are closed for improvement.

The over $147,000 contract for this project was awarded to DC Asphalt & Paving.

Currently, the parking lot at Kīlauea District Park is undergoing repaving renovations following recent improvements to Wai‘alae Beach Park and Petrie Community Park. Since September 2021, DPR has contracted nearly $2 million in repaving efforts at 11 park and garden locations across O‘ahu. Those also include:
