Krishna Jayaram appointed Deputy Managing Director;
Danette Maruyama to join the Department of Planning and Permitting

Krishna Jayaram appointed to be Deputy Managing Director

HONOLULU – Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Managing Director Mike Formby are pleased to announce that Krishna Jayaram has been appointed the City and County of Honolulu’s Deputy Managing Director to take effect immediately.  Former Deputy Managing Director Danette Maruyama will join the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) as Chief Innovation Strategist where she will support Director Dean Uchida and Deputy Director Dawn Takeuchi Apuna in modernizing the department through the development of improved operating and workflow processes, technology upgrades supporting greater efficiencies and savings, and a transition to cloud-based enterprise capabilities.  Maruyama’s more than 30 years of senior executive experience in the technology sector will align smartly with Mayor Blangiardi’s commitment to modernize DPP.

“During our first year in office, Danette managed to successfully implement a number of solutions to difficult assignments which had considerable positive impact, most notably her stellar work on the Rent and Utility Relief Program, and her innovative solutions to our Customer Services Division,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi.  “Danette’s many skill sets combined with her drive and determination to find creative solutions is exactly what we need to help with improving our operations in DPP.”

Jayaram, the City’s First Deputy Corporation Counsel since April 2021, brings years of city and state government experience to the Managing Directors Office.  Managing Director Formby worked with Krishna Jayaram in 2013 when Formby was the Director of the City’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and Jayaram was assigned counsel to DTS.

“Not only does Krishna have a great breadth of government experience, he excels in bringing people and projects together across sectors with accountability, integrity and humility, precisely what I am looking for in a deputy,” said Formby.  “He’s a smart self-starter who is focused and goal-oriented and there is no-one in the City I would rather work with to drive execution of Mayor Blangiardi’s vision for Honolulu than Krishna.”

“We are very fortunate and grateful Krishna accepted this new leadership role and I could not be more pleased to welcome him to the Managing Directors Office,” said Mayor Blangiardi.  “Mike and I thank Corporation Counsel Dana Viola for her encouraging attitude and mentorship of Krishna.”

Dana Viola will name a First Deputy Corporation Counsel in due time.
