Downtown Art Center -Honoring Former HoMA Director George Ellis On Our 1st Anniversary

Okagesama de...
(Thanks to you)

This month, the Downtown Art Center (DAC) is celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of our second-floor exhibition space.

Please join our volunteer staff and Board of Directors in honoring former Honolulu Museum of Art Director George Ellis as our first recipient of the new Okagesama de Award, established by DAC to honor individuals or organizations that have been pivotal in helping the arts thrive in Hawaiʻi.

In Japanese, "okagesama de" is a phrase of respect that translates to "I am who I am because of you." Part of our mission at DAC is to honor and recognize those who have come before, and who have made a significant difference in the development of the local arts community and shaped it into what it is today.

Former Honolulu Museum Director George Ellis was a visionary. As an artist, scholar, and administrator, he understood that a successful museum should be the cultural heartbeat of any community.  He also believed that art has the capacity to enrich people’s lives in some way, regardless of age, ethnicity, or educational background. As a director, he made an effort to reach out to and lend support to countless organizations and individuals in the community, and in doing so, made Hawaiʻi a better place in which to live.

The Downtown Art Center was founded on the same principles that motivated George Ellis—that members of a healthy community should have access to the arts regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances. For this reason, it made perfect sense to select George Ellis as the first posthumous recipient of the Okagesama de Award and celebrate his contributions to Hawaiʻi’s arts community.

In these difficult times, keeping the arts alive in Hawaiʻi and recognizing those who paved the way for us is more important than ever. As we enter our second year, we hope that you will join us in celebrating the memory of George Ellis and consider
supporting the Downtown Art Center in its efforts to expand access to the arts to all people in our community.

Together, we continue George Ellis’s legacy. Together, we make a difference. Together, we support the Downtown Art Center.

Sincerely,
Sandra Pohl
