It's Your Art: Art in Public Places

“Aquarius" at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol
“Aquarius,” a glass mosaic by Tadashi Sato, was cleaned by SFCA Exhibit Specialists in April. The mosaic is on the ground floor of the Hawaiʻi State Capitol building in downtown Honolulu.

Conservation Work at Kauai Community College
Conservation work was done in April on “Ke Maui Nei Ke Ea O Kauai I Puhi Aina Malu (The Spirit of Kauai Thrives in the Peaceful Land of Puhi)” bronze sculpture at Kauaʻi Community College, part of an SFCA contract with Rosa Lowinger & Associates that includes conservation work on several sculptures in the Art in Public Places Collection. This contract also includes training sessions for Hawaiʻi-based organizations and contractors (Honolulu Museum of Art, Honolulu Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts, Martin & Macarthur, and private contractors).

On the left is the sculpture before cleaning and on the right is the sculpture after being cleaned.

Art at the Capitol

The Hawaiʻi State Legislature's annual Art at the Capitol event in April featured live music by the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony while participating legislative offices stayed open late for the public to view artworks in their offices. The Hawaiʻi State Capitol currently has over 800 works of art from the Art in Public Places Collection. The next Art at the Capitol event is tentatively scheduled for April 3, 2020.

Top: visitors to Art at the Capitol voted on artworks done by state legislators earlier this year (read more on our website:
2019 Art at the Capitol and Legislator art class). The People’s Choice Awards for House and Senate went to Representative Amy Perruso and Senator Gil Keith-Agaran.

Leftt: Representative David Tarnas (House District 7, North Kohala, South Kohala and North Kona) with the recently installed photograph "Loihi 1" by Hawaiʻi Island photographer Matt Shallenberger. The photograph depicts a spot on the rocky northeastern shore of Hawaiʻi Island. Right: Senator Jarrett Keohokalole (District 24, Kāneʻohe, Marine Corps Base Hawaiʻi, Kailua, Heʻeia, ʻAhuimanu), Representative Tina Wildberger (Kihei, Wailea, Makena), and SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson.

What would you put in a time capsule? The current schedule has the new time capsule being installed on Statehood Day (August 16, 2019). State Archives is still asking for suggestions for items to be placed in the time capsule at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, and is taking suggestions from the public at: www.timecapsule.hawaii.gov.
