ART EXHIBITION: Nathan Lynch: Ceramic Nest Solutions

October 1 -- 19, 2018

Commons Gallery, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), Art Building

EXHIBITION SUMMARY:

Since 2009 ceramic artist Nathan Lynch has collaborated with MORELAB and Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge to design and fabricate nest modules that provide threatened seabirds interim breeding sites and shelters. In particular, the nests are designed to mitigate the impacts of burrow collapse due to erosion and mortality from nest predators. Lynch has designed five habitats to date. His most recent nests, designed for shearwaters, are being tested at Black Point, O‘ahu.

Lynch's work offers an exciting and important example of multidisciplinary applied research between artists and scientists. He is faculty and Chair of the Ceramics Program at California College of the Arts (CCA) in Oakland. As a sculptor and performance artist, Lynch has made collaboration and experimentation major components of his practice.
