Join us this Thursday (May 4th) for a mind-blowing installment of First Thursdays at Hawaiian Brian's!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- Tavana, a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards nominee who has performed at venues across the U.S. such as The Shrine (NYC), Skylark Cafe (Seattle), South by Southwest (Austin), and Blue Note Hawai`i (Honolulu). In 2009, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) invited Tavana to sing "Hawai`i 78" with him at the Hawai`i Theatre. "He's more the exception than the rule, he is a great human and I'm glad to know him" said Vedder while introducing Tavana to the audience. From their performance together, Vedder put it on a limited vinyl record given to 10,000 Pearl Jam fans. Tavana has shared stages with Alabama Shakes, Shakey Graves, Xavier Rudd, Jenny Lewis, Julian Marley, and Rebirth Brass Band.

-- A "No Rules" Slam. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED (poets/performers please see note at the bottom of this email). We will be running "No Rules" slams all throughout the summer, so get ready to witness all kinds of creative pieces!!

Validated parking for Hawaiian Brian's is $2 up to 3 hours, $4 up to 4 hours, and $6 up to 5 hours. There is plenty of street parking in the area as well (note, if you street park or walk/bike/bus, enter through the 24 Hour Fitness lobby on Kapi`olani and walk up the stairs).

Poets/performers: you will only need one piece to compete, as we will only be doing one round of performances. The three-minute time limit is still in effect. You do not have to break the rules to get up on the mic, but just know that you can (poet selection will be primarily random as usual). There will be 4 microphones, a CD player, a DJ with his/her equipment, a 1/8" cord for mp3 players and other audio devices, and one 1/4" cord to plug in basic instruments. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own equipment to make it happen. That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!! You can be in more than one piece if you are helping someone else out with theirs.
