PAʻI FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES AUGUST HAPA HAOLE HULA FESTIVAL EVENTS

Festival To Feature Free Events and Hawaii Theatre Concert

PAʻI Foundation announces three Hapa Haole Hula Festival events for August, two free events at Royal Hawaiian Center and the PAʻI Arts & Culture Center, and one ticketed event at the historic Hawaii Theatre. "Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima & Friends," will perform a free, noon show at the Royal Hawaiian Center Helumoa Royal Grove on Saturday, August 13^thfeaturing hapa haole hula favorites with live Hawaiian music; "Hapa Haole Hollywood" will feature a free "talk story" presentation on the impact of hapa haole music on the Hollywood film industry between 1937 and 1941 at the PAʻI Arts & Culture Center on Thursday, August 18^th at 6:30pm; and the ticketed "Hapa Haole Hula Festival Concert" will be held at the historic Hawaii Theatre on Sunday, August 28^th, at 5:00pm and will feature Danny Kaleikini, Cathy Foy, Kapolei Middle School Swing Band, Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau, Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima, and past hula and vocal winners. At Helumoa in Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel was one of the premiere showrooms for hapa haole music, starting in 1934 when composer and bandleader, Harry Owens, was appointed music director for the Hotel. It was also 1934 when Owens wrote "Sweet Leilani" to celebrate the birth of his daughter and which became the signature song of Owens' Royal Hawaiian Hotel Orchestra, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1937, and one of Bing Crosby's biggest hits.

"Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima & Friends" showcases hapa haole music with live Hawaiian musicians, vocalists, and hula by the keiki (children), wahine (women) and kāne (men) of Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima that will include hapa haole favorites like "Puka Puka Pants," "Show Me How to Do the Hula." "That's How They Do the Hula," "I Fell in Love with Honolulu," and more.

Honolulu theatre impresario, Burton White, hosts an hour-long presentation called "Hapa Haole Hollywood" which focuses on the impact of hapa haole music in Hollywood from 1937 when Harry Owens' "Sweet Leilani," sung by Bing Crosby, lifted the American recording industry out of the Great Depression, to 1942 and the advent of World War II.

With audience invited to get up and dance hula and partake in light refreshments, White will provide insights to haha haole music as a genre and highlight hapa haole music and hula from movies such as "Waikiki Wedding," "Honolulu,", "In the Navy," "Song of the Islands," "Hawaii Calls," "The Revolt of Mamie Stover," and more.

The PAʻI Foundation presents the "Hapa Haole Hula Festival Concert," a celebration of hula and the hapa haole era of Hawaiian music, which was most popular from the turn of the 20th century to the early 1940s. This era of Hawaiian music, the most universially recognized period, mixed English and Hawaiian language, mixed American and Hawaiian musical structure, and offered Hawaiian subject matter that was romantic, nostalgic, and often humerous.

Featured during this concert will be Danny Kaleikini; Cathy Foy; Charlene Kuʻulei Hazlewood, 2003 Miss Sophisticated Hula winner; Kaloku Holt, 2005 Vocalist winner; Michael Pili Pang and Hālau Hula Ka Noʻeau with their keiki, wahine and kāne; Victoria and Jeffrey Takamine and Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima; and the Kapolei Middle School Band, under the direction of Daryl Agena, performing newly commissioned arrangements of hapa haole favorites "Swingtime in Honolulu," "Aloha Week Hula," "Hula Blues," and "For You a Lei."
