A name that has been synonymous with auto care and maintenance, as well as a familiar name in Hawaii's households for more than 50 years, Midas Hawaii continues to proudly service the vehicles of Hawaii's families, and according to president and owner Bob Pereira, the company "is committed to earning your trust by providing you with the expertise, value and responsiveness you expect every time you visit us."

Midas Hawaii's story began the same year that Hawaii became the 50th state. In 1959, Ed Kageyama started the first Midas Hawaii shop at the current Beretania Street location. Twenty one years later, Tony and Bob Pereira purchased five existing (at the time) Midas shops from Kageyama. While Midas Hawaii is widely known today for brake work, it was then known to be the "go-to" place for mufflers, a title that remained for many years. From its inception until the '70s, customers went to Midas Hawaii for mufflers and the business built its household name based upon the servicing of exhaust systems for nearly 20 years.

"With the introduction by part manufacturers of longer-lasting stainless steel mufflers in the 1970s, Midas Hawaii turned our focus to auto repair, oil changes and tires," said Pereira.

Expansion happened soon after that, with six more shop locations including Wahiawa, Kaimuki, Kona, Maui, Hilo and Kaua‘i allowing the company to better serve customers throughout the state. As technology changed, so did Midas, expanding its services to include a variety of auto repair such as "preventive auto maintenance services (including new car service intervals), suspension, fast and convenient oil changes, alignments, climate control, tune-ups, fluid flushes, and tires," said Pereira. He reiterated that today's cars are more complex than ever. But that isn't stopping Midas from making sure your vehicles are in tip-top shape for your drive to and from work, home and school.

Unfortunately, Tony Pereira passed away in 2010, a huge loss for Midas Hawaii. Bob Pereira's wife, Dianne, stepped up in a big way after Tony's passing, and her involvement with the company expanded greatly to fill a void that Tony's absence had left behind. While she was doing Midas Hawaii's advertising since the late '90s, today she serves as its Marketing/Advertising Director. Together, Dianne and Bob expanded Midas Hawaii even further, adding two new shops under the Midas Corporation name called SpeeDee Oil Change.

SpeeDee Oil Change shops were added in both Waipahu and Wahiawa and "(the shops) employ the latest technology and processes to create the quickest oil change with the best customer experience possible," said Dianne. With its first location opening in Waipahu in 2010, this shop has become very popular because of the customer "experience," convenience and quick service. The second SpeeDee Oil Change location held its grand re-opening in Wahiawa in December 2013, and is run by a well-managed team and great staff that keeps the customers' experience as top priority.

And while customers can now get a variety of services done at Midas Hawaii as well as at SpeeDee Oil Change locations, Midas does more brakes than any other shop in the state. "Our brake pads and shoes come with a lifetime guarantee, which means that once you've purchased them, you will never need to pay for brake pads and shoes again, as long as you keep your car," said Bob.

In 2012 Midas international, (Midas Hawaii's Franchisor) was bought by TBC Corp., a large tire conglomerate on the U.S. mainland. TBC Corp. is also a unit of Japan's Sumitomo Corp. The positive for Midas Hawaii in this corporate decision is that the company is able to get tires at better prices than most, and can give its customers a quality brand that TBC stands behind. How does this translate to the customer with any current specials or low prices? All Oahu Midas Hawaii locations are having a Midas Madness Tire Sale right now.

On top of sales, value and a wide variety of services that you can receive at Midas Hawaii, you can also know that it is a company focused on giving back to the surrounding communities by sponsoring numerous charitable events. One of the organizations the company helps is Ronald McDonald House Charities. "Every year we hold a Golf Tournament in Memory of Antonio Pereira III (Bob's brother) and the proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities," said Dianne.

As part of Midas Hawaii's motivation of being "customer first," the company caters to the modern consumer by allowing the customer to not only search for information on its website, but even go as far as to book appointments as well view videos and other material to educate them on their car's care and maintenance.

"We created this website to let everyone know who we are and what we do," said Dianne, adding that many "online only" offers are posted on the website as well as events going on that customers can find only online. "We make it easy not only to purchase services, but also to make appointments at your convenience," she said.

"Our team, led by Jimmy Medina, VP/General Manager, is dedicated to giving our customers excellent service with the best quality parts that stand the test of a lifetime warranty. We offer Total Car Care under one roof, follow the vehicle manufacturer's and MAP standards and provide great value in all of our services. Our service comes with a free visual courtesy check of major systems and components so that customers have a heads up on what they need to pay attention to. Our Managers and employees from Hawaii continue to solidify our reputation asthebest. Youcantrustthe Midas touch," she concluded.
