ART EXHIBITION

YUAN: by Beili Liu

A site-specific installation

Yuan / åéŸ, in Chinese, refers to "origin", "beginning" and "cause". It also stands for "field".

Yuan / 圆, another character with the same pronunciation also means "round" and "circular".

YUAN: by Beili Liu is a site-specific installation that incorporates bamboo, salt, and fire. The artist was inspired by her Chinese roots and by the land, sea, and ever-changing volcanic forces of Hawai‘i Island. Using thousands of cylinders of charred bamboo containing handfuls of salt, Beili Liu creates pathways through an evocative circular field in the University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery.
