FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring G. Join us this Thursday (January 2nd) for a top notch installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe!! As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- G. Yamazawa. He is a Kundiman Fellow, National Poetry Slam Finalist, two-time Southern Fried Champion, two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, and ranked 2nd at the Ontario International Poetry Slam. He has featured at venues and universities across the nation including the Sundance Film Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, and the historic Nuyorican Poets' Cafe.
-- An official qualifier for the 2013-2014 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2014 Grand Slam Finals (on April 3rd, 2014) that will determine HawaiiSlam's 11th National Poetry Slam team.
-- Music by DJ Toki (Sisters in Sound)
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, Risa Oram, and Melissa Soriano)

The 11th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (January 2nd, 2014). The top two poets will qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals in April 2014 that will
determine the team to represent Hawai`i at the 2014 National Poetry Slam in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.

The special feature for this show is G. Yamazawa. He is a Kundiman Fellow, National Poetry Slam Finalist, two-time Southern Fried Champion, two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist, and ranked 2nd at the Ontario International Poetry Slam. He has featured at venues and universities across the nation including the Sundance Film Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, and the historic Nuyorican Poets' Caf . As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.
