FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Makana (Guitar Virtuoso) and a "No Rules" slam. Winner of the night receives $100. LOCATION: Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street), Thursday 12/5/2013, 8:30pm. -- Makana. Described as "dazzling" by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and composer who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. His guitar playing has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film "The Descendants." Makana's captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, open for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello, and perform in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House. He'll be performing songs from his new CD release RIPE.
-- A special "No Rules" Slam. Collaborations, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED (poets/performers please see note at the bottom of this email).

-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Sequoia, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, Nikila Badua, Jeremiah Skurtu, Sarah Hodges, Hanam Mun, and Risa Oram)
PRESS RELEASE:
HawaiiSlam's First Thursdays celebrates the holiday season with a special "No Rules" slam on December 5, 2013. All team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. These slams are designed to break the norm and push the boundaries of live theatrical performance.
This event will not be a qualifier for the 2014 HawaiiSlam finals (to be held in April 2014).
The special features for this show is Makana.
