Hawaii Opera Theatre announces the 2013-14 Opera Season

Honolulu, Hawaii - Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT), the Islands' only major operatic company, presents a season of beloved Opera that is sure to spark a sense of nostalgia for audience members of all ages!

"I am very excited about the new HOT season!" Says Henry G. Akina, who has been the General & Artistic Director of Hawaii Opera Theatre since 1996. Akina is highly decorated for his work including honors from Opera America and the National Endowment of Arts and Letters. "The combination of one of Puccini's best-loved Operas with Gilbert & Sullivan's comic masterpiece together with the unique pairing of Pagliacci with one of the world's most well-known choral works is not to be missed!"

Puccini's powerful setting of Gozzi's dramatic fairy-tale opens the Hawaii Opera Theatre 2013-2014 season on October 11, 13, & 15. Set in China, the story revolves around Prince Calaf's attempt to win the hand of Princess Turandot by successfully answering 3 riddles. Will the Prince escape the executioner's axe and melt the heart of his Princess?

Next up we have the rare opportunity to experience both I Pagliacci and Carmina Burana on March 28, 30, & April 1, 2014. Don't miss this opportunity to watch as the clown wreaks vengeance in Leoncavallo's satire, Pagliacci, a tale of love, jealousy and death! Then witness Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, a collection of raunchy songs from a Benedictine monastery, transformed and presented as it was originally conceived, on stage.

The final installment of HOT's Opera Season is Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado on June 13-15 & 20-22, 2014. Enjoy the series of hilarious events, as Nanki-Poo, the son of The Mikado, tries to escape an arranged marriage and finds new love along the way. Although set in Japan, this enchanting work brings together worlds in only the way the opera can, as the story makes fun of English society and mores of the time.
