DIG THIS VIBE HOSTS ALL-VINYL REGGAE DANCE PARTY WITH PAPA WOOWU & JAH GUMBY

They don't throw dance parties like this anymore. On Saturday, July 20, two of Hawaii's veteran vinyl DJs will rock Honolulu's Downbeat Lounge with rare reggae records and a heavy dose of good vibes, courtesy of Honolulu promoters Dig This Vibe. Papa Woowu of Hilo and Jah Gumby of local reggae band Ooklah The Moc will be DJing at 42 N Hotel St. from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for a $6 cover. The event is open to ages 21 and over.

"Growing up in Hilo in the 80's, I started listening to groups like Black Uhuru, Twinkle Brothers and The Itals," says Woowu, who hunts for hard-to-find reggae records from around the world. "I love collecting records, it just gets rarer and rarer!"

Woowu, whose real name is Justin Legaspi, was also in local hip-hop group Direct Descendants and the underground dub duo known as Burning Religiously. He recently released a free, vinyl-only mix of rare reggae music available exclusively at soundcloud.com/wedigthisvibe.

The dance party also features Jah Gumby (Ryan Murakami) whose musical projects Ooklah The Moc and Father Psalms Studios have become staples in the islands' reggae community. Also performing that night are guest artist Ryan Chun and Dig This Vibe residents Oliver Seguin, Shitzr, Aloha Got Soul and hypoetical.

In addition to the Downbeat Lounge event, Dig This Vibe is hosting a BYOB booze cruise with Yacht Rock Hawaii from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the same evening. Transportation to Downbeat Lounge is included with the boat party. Tickets are required in advance, and are available through yachtrockhawaii@gmail.com.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
"Was there on opening night... What a great place. Had the loco moco and was so full that I had to take dessert to go (Otto Cake). Simply delicious. The staff was great. Instantly became my favorite diner."

"Even as we walked into Downbeat, the modern diner decor and cozy feel was enough to have me praying to the gods that the food and service would be up to snuff enough for me to make this a regular stop on my Chinatown circuit. We sat at the bar and our very friendly bartender - Serena - gave us menus and gave us the breakdown about their alcohol policy."

The basket of fritters are a MUST GET, though. Big pieces, a cup of caramel sauce, and fritters so soft and sweet that the sauce is almost an after thought. if you MUST get dessert, get the basket of fritters.

HOURS
Monday through Thursday 11am-3am and Friday and Saturday 11am-4am.
