  • First Thursdays Poetry Slam at Fresh Cafe - Thursday 7/11/2013

FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Marc Marcel (International Touring Poet) and the "No Rules" summer. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED. Winner of the night receives $100. LOCATION: Fresh Cafe, 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street), Thursday 7/11/2013 (Altered Date), 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm, and $5 after. Since the First Thursday of the month falls on July 4th, our next show will be on July 11th. The July 11th show will continue our "No Rules" summer, where all team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time limit will still remain in effect.

The special feature for this show is Marc Marcel, a poet who has performed in over 150 American Cities and 4 Countries. He has made 5 National Television appearances including Lyrics Cafe, No Reservations, and a skit for The Jimmy Kimmel Show. He has also graced the stages of many legendary venues including the Smithsonian in Washington, DC for President Obama's Presidential Inaugural Peace Ball, as well as Scion Night at Knots Scary Farm (in front of 12,000 people). As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at, send an email to, or call 387-9664.

  • Kealoha - Poet and Storyteller
    Kealoha is an internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller. He is the first poet in Hawai`i's history to perform at a governor's inauguration, and in 2010 he was selected as a master artist for a National Endowment for the Arts program.
