FIRST THURSDAYS: $100 NATIONALLY CERTIFIED SLAM POETRY COMPETITION AND OPEN MIC... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Big Poppa E (National Champ and 3-Time HBO Def Poet). Winner of the night receives $100. The official 2012-2013 slam season begins this September!! On September 6th, the HawaiiSlam team will start qualifiers for its 10th official team. The top two poets from each monthly slam will qualify for the 2013 Grand Slam Finals for a chance to represent Hawai`i at the National Poetry Slam in Boston, MA.

The special feature for this show is Big Poppa E, a National Poetry Slam Champion who has appeared 3 times on HBO's Def Poetry Jam. He has also been featured on BET, NPR, and CBS's 60 Minutes. Furthermore, he has headlined at more than 200 showcases in 44 states, and has been praised as "the leader of a new men's movement" in the LA Times and "exuberantly defiant" by the New York Times. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will also feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.

-- The kickoff of the 2012-2013 HawaiiSlam season. Normal slam rules apply, and the top two poets will advance to the 2013 Grand Slam Finals that will determine HawaiiSlam's 10th National Poetry Slam team.
