Exhibition Summary
In 1999 artist Katie Small found herself caught in the aftermath of post-war Kosovo, a country reeling from ethnic cleansing. Based on a specific memory of her experiences there, she transforms the Commons Gallery into a multi-sensory experience in her MFA thesis exhibition Residual.

Upon entering the gallery the viewers are immediately faced with a portion of the artist’s studio process—a desk, a chair, and research materials that have been immersed in white paint. With further exploration, the visitors engage in the resonating soundscape that emanates from the walls. As viewers proceed into the exhibition their own steps are amplified. An exhibition of a visual memory, Residual is heightened and complemented by the sounds and experiences of those who visit.
