First Thursdays: $100 Nationally Certified Slam Poetry Competition and Open Mic... An evening of performance poetry, music, and live art hosted by Kealoha. Featuring Jason Carney (National Slam Legend) and the No Rules summer. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED. Winner of the night receives $100. First Thursdays continues its no rules summer with another quality show on June 2nd. All team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are ALLOWED. However, the 3 minute time rule will still remain in effect.

The special feature for this show is Jason Carney, who was honored as a national legend of slam poetry in 2006 and 2007. He has appeared on several seasons of the HBO television show Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam and has been seen on the national geographic channel. Carney is a former skinhead who, in a rehabilitation center in his youth, had a life changing experience when he roomed with a gay man who was dying from AIDS. He now uses poetry to continue to reform himself and heal others. As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

-- A "No Rules" Slam. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED (poets/performers please see note at the bottom of this email). We will be running "No Rules" slams all throughout the summer, so get ready to witness all kinds of creative pieces!!
-- djrome (Jerome James) has been in the O`ahu music and art scene for over 15 years. Primarily a drumset player, he has played with Hawai`i s best musicians of all genres. He now has his own music studio (jeromejamesjrums.com) and is focusing on electronic music production and collaboration with the artists of Hawaii to create works of art. His DJ sound is comprised of jazz, soundscapes, pulsating beats, and BaYsss!
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Gold

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm.
