The "No Rules" summer is here, and we are celebrating by bringing in a super special house band!! Join us this Thursday (May 5th) for a next-level installment of First Thursdays at Fresh Cafe. As always, this HawaiiSlam show will be hosted by Kealoha and will feature:

-- The Quadraphonix, a group that straddles the gap between avant-garde improvisation and accessible funk, jazz fusion, and world beat grooves. Their original music incorporates sounds from Latin America to India, and is derived from each of their life experiences and ethnic backgrounds growing up in Hawaii, Malaysia, Panama, Haiti, and New York. They have simultaneously earned standing as relentlessly innovative musicians and an enormously popular act, opening up for artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Ozomatli, and Eek a Mouse. Furthermore, they will join us as our house band by playing throughout the evening and making themselves available to play with the poets/performers!!
-- A "No Rules" Slam. Team pieces, musical accompaniment, cover poems, props, etc are ALLOWED (poets/performers please see note at the bottom of this email). We will be running "No Rules" slams all throughout the summer, so get ready to witness all kinds of creative pieces!!
-- Live painting by the resident artists (past artists include Solomon Enos, Erin McCullough, Kimi Werner, The Storekeeper, Dhyana Zagri, Stanstill, Nabahe, Wes Ka`uhane, Neal Uno, Pancho Abalos, Mike Fresh, Manny P, Patti Bruce, Aaron Char, Mark Agnir, Jeff Lum, Samantha Goldman, Earl Washington, Clinton "Clean" Haness, Carol Tagawa, TJ Howe, and Nikila Badua)

First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (600+ in attendance)!! HawaiiSlam has official 501(c)(3) non-profit status through Poetry Slam Inc. Please forward to anybody who may be interested...

Poets/performers: you will only need one piece to compete, as we will only be doing one round of performances. The three-minute rule is still in effect. You do not have to break the rules to get up on the mic, but just know that you can (poet selection will be primarily random as usual). There will be 4 microphones, a DJ with his/her equipment, and one 1/4" cord to plug in basic instruments. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own equipment to make it happen. That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!! You can be in more than one piece if you are helping someone else out with theirs.

Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
