PRESS RELEASE:

The 8th official HawaiiSlam season rolls on with its monthly qualifiers at First Thursdays (March 3rd, 2011). This slam will be the "last chance slam" for poets to qualify for the HawaiiSlam Finals on April 7th, 2011 that will determine the 8th team to represent Hawaii at the 2011 National Poetry Slam in Boston, MA.

The special feature for this show is C.R. Avery, a genius in many genres - blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. He has toured throughout Canada (including almost every major folk festival), the USA, and Europe (headlining or opening for Billy Bragg, Buck 65, and Sage Francis). Furthermore, he has garnered the attention of music peers the likes of Tom Waits ("...he's blowin' my mind"); blues harp trail blazer Charlie Musselwhite ("...no one plays harmonica like him no one "); and folk legend Utah Phillips ("...raw talent"). As always, the night will be hosted by Kealoha, and will feature live painters and a guest DJ who will provide turntable sorcery throughout the evening.

Fresh Cafe is located at 831 Queen Street (@ intersection with Cooke Street). Ample street parking and $4 valet parking will be available. Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.

First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (600+ in attendance)!! HawaiiSlam has official 501(c)(3) non-profit status through Poetry Slam Inc. Please forward to anybody who may be interested...

Poets/performers: you will only need one piece to compete, as we will only be doing one round of performances. The three-minute rule is still in effect. You do not have to break the rules to get up on the mic, but just know that you can (poet selection will be primarily random as usual). There will be 4 microphones, a DJ with his/her equipment, and one 1/4" cord to plug in basic instruments. If you have more sound requirements, bring your own equipment to make it happen. That being said, you have 30 seconds to set up... do not make us wait for you!! You can be in more than one piece if you are helping someone else out with theirs.

Doors open at 7:30pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $3 before 8:30pm and $5 after. For more info, check out the website at www.HawaiiSlam.com, send an email to info@HawaiiSlam.com, or call 387-9664.
