About the Exhibit
Like dance and writing, art is the release of self to others. With a personal experience in mind, Kristin McAndrews transforms monoprints with acrylic paint and collage. She works layer upon layer to create a sense of light and color, liberating images/memories of isolation to elation. Inspired by daily solitary walks, Susan Stuart's acrylics on canvas absorb and become intimate with the nature. In each image, she methodically releases worldly concerns -- shed for a sense of freedom. Out of the daily buzz, a place of quiet attention becomes the reality of her art.

Kristin McAndrews was born in Seattle, Washington. Since 1976, she has lived in Hawaii. She teaches English as an associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her scholarly work focuses on folklore, oral narrative, life writing and gender studies. Since 2004, Kristin has studied sketching, figure drawing, color and composition, and advanced gesture and monoprint (her favorite course). In spring 2010, she took George Woollard's Master's Painting Workshop in Palolo. Her work has been featured at the Kuykendall Gallery at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and South Street Gallery.
