Doaker: African American Male between the ages of 45 and 50. A tall, thin man with severe features, who has for all intents and purposes retired from the world though he works full-time as a railroad cook.
Boy Willie: Some piano experience a must. African American Male between the ages of 25 and 30 with an infectious grin and a boyishness that is apt for his name. He is brash, impulsive, talkative and somewhat crude in speech and manner. Plays boogie-woogie on the piano. Doaker's nephew.
Lymon: African American Male between the ages of 25 and 30. Boy Willie's partner. He talks little and then with a straightforwardness that is often disarming.
Berniece: African American Female between the ages of 30 and 35 with an eleven-year-old daughter, she is still in mourning after losing her husband three years ago. Doaker's niece. Boy Willie's sister.
Maretha: African American Female. Berniece's eleven-year-old daughter soon to turn twelve.
Avery: African American Male between the ages of 35 and 40, honest and ambitions, he has taken to the city like a fish to water. Takes advantage of the opportunities that did not exist in the rural South.
Grace: African American Female between the ages of 19 and 25 years old. Really pretty and sassy.
