  • Workshops Offered for Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Event Announced - February 23-27, 2009

LAHAINA, MAUI (November 30, 2008)- What better time to visit a neighbor island, hone your artistic skills, support the arts, and snap up a stunning work of art than during the upcoming Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, Feb. 14-21st? For one week only, renowned artists from Hawaii and the mainland will gather to capture the island's glorious landscapes and singular characteristics.

The event commences with a Kick off Paint Out at three of Maui's most stunning locations: D.T. Fleming Beach, Kapalua Bay, and Honolua Bay. On Feb. 17th guest lecturer Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum in California, will present The Basics of a Great Painting: Developing a Critical Eye for Collecting the Best at the Pioneer Inn, Lahaina. Featured events also include the Pacific'O Sunset Paint Out and Pioneer Inn Lahaina Harbor Quick Draw, designed to challenge the skill of talented artists to include George Allan, Betty Hay Freeland, Darrell Hill, Ronaldo Macedo, Kevin Macpherson, among others.

Invitational participants Ken Auster and Camille Przewodek will also offer workshops before and after the main event. Ken Auster's three day workshop will be held Feb. 10-12, and Camille Przewodek's five day workshop is set for Feb. 23-27. A portion of the workshop fees are going towards a youth art scholarship fund.

The week's festivities will conclude at the Maui No Ka ÔOi Magazine Gala Reception where one hundred paintings, three of the best paintings from each artist plus the Quick Draw paintings, will be unveiled at The Village Gallery, 120 Dickenson Street in Lahaina. Art lovers and collectors will have an opportunity to admire and purchase the newly created works while enjoying refreshments and mingling with artists.

The 2009 event is coordinated by Islanders- Hawaii Plein Air Painters, West Maui Cultural Council, and The Village Gallery. Sponsors include: County of Maui Office of Economic Development; Hawaii Tourism Authority, Maui No Ka ÔOi magazine, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, Pioneer Inn, Pacific'O Restaurant, Maui Land & Pineapple Co., Kaanapali Land Management Corp., Maui Printing Co., The Irvine Museum and Kapalua Adventure Center Café with donations from local businesses including Tropic Water and Maui Grown Coffee Company Store.
