Survivor Spirit book release to benefit Kapiolani High Risk Breast Program

HONOLULU (October 10, 2008) A new book celebrating the 'beauty, passion and power' of local breast cancer survivors will be unveiled at a special brunch event at Mariposa at Neiman Marcus on Sunday, October 19th at 9:30 a.m.

The Survivor Spirit: The Beauty, Passion & Power of Breast Cancer Survivors is a collection of portraits by James Anshutz, designed and written by Cynthia Y.H. Derosier. Event tickets, which include brunch and an advance copy of the book, are $100 per person. All proceeds benefit the High Risk Breast Program at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. For reservations contact the Kapi`olani Health Foundation at 535-7100.

Bound in a pink jacket with a pink silk ribbon bookmark, The Survivor Spirit features 20 courageous women who share their physical, mental, spiritual and emotional struggle and triumph over this devastating disease. Some of these women were saved by early detection; some knew they would have cancer long before they had symptoms, while others lived against all odds. Their stories are compelling, dramatic and intensely personal, but the women all share a common thread: they are not simply 'survivors, but have come to the surprising realization that their lives are richer and sweeter in cancer's wake. Most of these 20 women are scheduled to be in attendance at the event.

Martha Smith, chief operating officer at Kapiolani, it will discuss new breakthroughs in early detection, which leads to a better chance for successful treatment.

'Pink-inspired attire is encouraged. After the brunch Neiman Marcus will host an exclusive book signing that will be open to the general public, with additional copies of the book available for purchase ($24.95 each). Five dollars from each book sold at Neiman Marcus benefits the Kapi`olani Health Foundation; a portion of the proceeds from sales at all other locations will also benefit the Foundation.
