June 2025 Exhibit: Collage and Clay

Join us First Friday for our Opening Reception for Collage and Clay! Come see a beautiful collection of ceramic work as well as mixed media creations! If you’d like to know more, feel free to read below! If you’re already sold then we’ll see you on Friday

This Exhibit showcases the exquisite collages and mixed media pieces created by a vibrant group of artists who gather monthly at the serene Ho’omaluhia Botanical Gardens.

Susan Rogers-Aregger was the heart and soul of this artistic group for many years guiding and inspiring fellow artists with her profound knowledge and boundless love for collage making. Her untimely passing in 2017 left a void, yet her legacy continues to thrive through the ongoing efforts of this devoted group. In honoring Susan’s Memory, the artists have not only maintained their monthly meetings but also perpetuated her teachings, wisdom, and enthusiasm for this medium. Through their work, Susan’s spirit and passion live on, creating a bridge between past inspirations and future innovations.

The exhibit collages are a visual feast, meticulously created using hand dyed papers, laminated onto a canvas surface. This intricate process involves the use of an Xacto knife skillfully, akin to a painters brush, to “paint on and pull off” the papers, section by section. Each layer is allowed to dry thoroughly before the addition of a new one resulting in a seamless blend of colors and textures. Susan particularly cherished the vibrant and surprising colors that emerged from these layers papers, a sentiment shared by her fellow artists.

Susan was also a talented ceramic artist and therefore it is fitting to include ceramic artwork as part of this exhibit.

In Loving Memory

Susan Rogers-Aregger
June 28, 1951 - July 2, 2017

Remembering Susan
Susan Rogers-Aregger lived and worked in Hawaii for over three decades. A prolific artist, she specialized in hand-dyed paper collage and ceramics. An enthusiastic mentor and teacher, she trained artists in Hawaii and at the historic Chautauqua Institution in New York. She co-authored the book, Paper-Dyeing for Collage and Crafts. As a member of many visual arts groups, Susan was well-known for her giving spirit, friendly smile and enthusiastic laugh. She participated in many events and exhibits in the early years of The ARTS at Marks Garage, and we are thrilled to name this space in her honor.

Dedication of the Susan Rogers-Aregger Gallery has been made possible by a generous gift from Dan Fox-Aregger, in loving memory of Susan.
