Downtown Art Center Presents “The Essence of Things”: An Exhibition of Prints, Paintings, and Sculptures by George Woollard and Jinja Kim, On View May 1-31, 2025
Honolulu (April 2025) – Downtown Art Center, at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave., is proud to present "The Essence of Things," an exhibition of prints, paintings, and sculptures by distinguished Hawaiʻi-based veteran artist couple George Woollard and Jinja Kim. On view from May 1 to 31, 2025 in the second floor Main Gallery, this show offers a unique exploration of visual form and perception by both artists, with some fresh new pieces from Woollard.
“There is a truth to the shapes, colors, and composition of art,” says Woollard. “If you acknowledge them, you can work with them. This exhibition gives attention to the intrinsic qualitative properties of things.”
Join us for the Opening Reception on First Friday, May 2, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., to meet the artists and experience their work in person.
The exhibition is free and open to the public, on view during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Woollard and Kim will be leading a free, public Artists' Walkthrough of the gallery on Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. Attendees will learn a little more about the artists' processes and inspirations, and have the opportunity to ask questions about the works.
In conjunction with the exhibition, George Woollard will lead a hands-on Color and Composition Workshop on two consecutive Sundays: May 18 and May 25, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will learn to balance composition
and manipulate color and shape using colored papers and watercolor. This is a rare opportunity to study with one of Hawaiʻi’s most respected veteran artists and arts instructors. The cost for this workshop is $200, which includes a materials fee. Register at downtownarthi.org/classes. For more information on upcoming events and exhibitions at Downtown Art Center, visit downtownarthi.org.

REHAB Hospital of the Pacific Presents: The Journey Forward: Stroke Survivors Healing Through Art On View April 12 - May 4, 2025
REHAB Hospital of the Pacific (REHAB) is proud to announce its upcoming art exhibition, The Journey Forward: Stroke Survivors Healing Through Art. The exhibition will showcase the transformative power of creativity in stroke recovery, providing a platform for stroke survivors to share their personal journeys through art.
Stroke survivors often face significant physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges that affect not just their lives but those of their caregivers. Through REHAB’s Creative Arts Program, stroke survivors discover the healing power of creativity – showing that recovery is not defined by what happens to us, but by how we choose to respond. The exhibition highlights this journey of resilience and hope.
The Journey Forward features a series of paintings and collaborative monoprints created by stroke survivors and their caregivers. These art pieces symbolize the complex journey of recovery, illustrating both the struggles and triumphs of those affected by stroke. Each piece layers symbolic colors, textures and imagery, telling stories of personal strength and healing. For more information, visit rehabhospital.org.
