“Pasefika 2024: Selected Artists” To Showcase Contemporary Pacific Island Art and Photography at Downtown Art Center,
June 5 - July 27, 2024
Honolulu (May 2024) – Downtown Art Center is pleased to host "Pasefika 2024: Selected Artists", the third in a series of art exhibitions focused on Hawaiʻi’s Pacific Island neighbors. “Pasefika 2024” will be on view from June 5 - July 27 in Downtown Art Center’s Courtyard Gallery, located on the Second Floor of the historic Chinatown Gateway Plaza building at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave. Exhibitions are always free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A First Friday Opening Reception for this exhibition will be held on Friday, June 7 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.
“Pasefika 2024: Selected Artists” is a multimedia exhibition curated by Floyd K. Takeuchi, featuring Pacific Islander artists who are residents in Hawaiʻi, alongside American artists with extensive experience in the Pacific Islands and a special portfolio of little-seen photographs from the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia by Danee Hazama, a Japanese American photographer who has lived on Tahiti for nearly 40 years.
The exhibition will coincide with the 13th Annual Festival of Pacific Arts, or FestPAC, an event held every four years since 1972, which is taking place in Honolulu from June 6-16, 2024. It is a follow-up to last year’s groundbreaking “7 Degrees North: The Arts of Micronesia” exhibition, which is believed to be the first art exhibition by a major Honolulu arts organization featuring contemporary Pacific Islands artists who live in Hawaiʻi. Five of the eight artists featured in “Pasefika 2024” had their gallery debut in “7 Degrees North.”
The artists selected for inclusion in “Pasefika 2024” are:
• Charcoal artist Lissette Yamase (Federated States of Micronesia)
• Graphic and fashion designer Eric Cano (Federated States of Micronesia)
• The women members of Kora Tilmeojoj, practitioners of the art of fine weaving (Marshall Islands)
• Photographer Danee Hazama (French Polynesia)
• Printer and painter Margo Vitarelli (Hawaiʻi and Palau)
• Photographer Floyd K. Takeuchi (Hawaiʻi), also the exhibition’s curator
