Hawaiʻi Craftsmen Present the 2024 Fiber Hawaiʻi Juried Exhibition at Downtown Art Center, May 3 - June 1, 2024
Honolulu (April 2024) – Since 1982, Hawaiʻi Craftsmen has sponsored the biennial “Fiber Hawaiʻi” juried exhibition. “Fiber Hawaiʻi 2024: In, Of, or About Fiber” will be displayed in the Downtown Art Center’s (DAC) Main Gallery from May 3 – June 1, 2024. The exhibition is free and open to the public, on view during regular gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The First Friday Opening Reception will be held on Friday, May 3 from 5:30 - 8 p.m., with a juror walk-through at 5 p.m. and award presentation at 6 p.m.
The 2024 Fiber Hawaiʻi exhibition challenges artists to create works “In, Of or About Fiber.” Artists who work in any craft media have been invited to consider making artwork with a fiber sensibility. Past exhibits have included woven glass, clay, wood and metal, as well as works in more traditional fiber media such as weavings, handmade paper, basketry, stitchery, quilts, batiks, textile design, kapa, and mixed media. Works accepted may be functional or non-functional.
The juror for this exhibition is Cameron Taylor-Brown. Her work is widely exhibited and has been featured in Fiber Art Now, American Craft, Handwoven and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot. In 2019, she curated the critically acclaimed exhibition "Material Meaning: A Living Legacy of Anni Albers" at the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles, California. She is the founder of ARTSgarage, a textile resource center in Los Angeles, and teaches workshops at ARTSgarage, schools, guilds, museums and conferences throughout the United States and Canada. Find out more about her at www.camerontaylor-brown.com. The public is invited to attend a FREE juror's lecture, on Sunday, April 28 from 4-6 p.m. in the Downtown Art Center second floor Classroom. In this lecture, titled "Fiber Trails," Taylor-Brown will discuss her travels to Bhutan, the Peruvian Highlands, Gujarat, India, and the Galapagos Islands. She will share images of landscapes, people and their traditional textiles, examine examples of textiles from each country, and view and discuss artwork inspired by these journeys. No registration required.
