Downtown Art Center Presents “Dreams of Waking: Mind-Bending Collage Art by Jeff Gere,” January 4-27, 2024

Honolulu (December 2023) – Downtown Art Center at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave., Second Floor, presents “Dreams of Waking: Mind-Bending Collages by Jeff Gere” from January 4 to 27, 2024, in its Courtyard Gallery. The exhibition will be on free and on view to the public during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be a First Friday Opening Reception on Friday, January 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

In addition, the public is invited to a series of FREE Artist Talks with master storyteller and collage artist Jeff Gere on Saturdays, January 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Come meet the artist and discuss his work, the process, and find out what these complex collages have to say to you.

Humans spend a third of our lives sleeping. What goes on inside our minds while we dream, and what does it look like? Jeff Gere, widely known as a master storyteller, has been hand-making collage art privately for decades. In “Dreams of Waking,” he reveals 50 collage images, most of which will be on view for the first time ever, based around this theme.

“They’re creativity puzzles, dialogues with the subconscious, aesthetic gymnastics,” says the artist. “I find the right random combination of elements, arranged in just the right way, and POP!”

Jeff explains his process: “Collage is a simple technology. Gather bits of images from printed material everywhere for years. Trim and categorize them by color or theme or feel. One day, with plenty of time ahead, open one of those fat file drawers. Choose an intriguing background and fine-cut images that fit into that universe. Move them around until there is a magical “Ah!”, a compositional “Pop!” It can take awhile. It is fastidious work. It is manic. It is exhilarating.”

Come marvel at how photographic realism can be bent into surreal visual logic through these gorgeous handcrafted paper collages, bizarre images which tell a poetic story. Titles include “The Great Hall of Dreams,” “The Gatekeeper,” “Portrait as a REM Cycle,” “Zen on REM,” “Coat of Slumber,” Behind the Veil,” and more.
