HAWAIʻI HANDWEAVERS’ HUI PRESENTS ‘SURROUNDED BY WATER’ A JURIED TEXTILE AND FUSED GLASS EXHIBITION, AUGUST 2-19, 2023 AT DOWNTOWN ART CENTER
Opening Reception: First Friday, August 4 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Hawaii Handweavers' Hui & The Glass Fusion Collective presents: Surrounded by Water
On View August 2 - 19, 2023
“Surrounded by Water,” a juried exhibition presented by the
Hawaiʻi Handweavers’ Hui and The Glass Fusion Collective, opens August 2-19 in the Downtown Art Center Main Gallery at 1041 Nu’uanu Ave., 2nd floor. The exhibition will be on view during regular gallery hours, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

An Opening Reception will be held on First Friday, August 4, from 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Handwoven textiles and fused glass objects inspired by the effect of water on individuals, our island communities, and the world at large will be the theme for juror Stacie Robinson, a ceramicist and research ecologist with NOAA’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. “I dwell in a unique space at the intersection of art and science. A love of nature and the marine environment is the core that unites these seemingly disparate foci.”

In addition to the Downtown Art Center exhibition, award-winning textile pieces from the exhibit and pieces by Hawai’i Island weavers will be on display at
Kahilu Theatre in Waimea from August 24 to October 29, Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and during theater shows.

The Hawai’i Handweavers’ Hui celebrates its 70th anniversary this year as a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging and promoting excellence in hand weaving by bringing together weavers, spinners, dyers, fiber artists and educators who share the joy and passion of the fiber arts. Since 2021, the Hui has offered a wide array of fiber arts classes in its studio adjacent to the Downtown Art Center.
