DOWNTOWN ART CENTER PRESENTS ‘THE WILD, WHIMSICAL WORLD OF BONHUI UY,’ FEBRUARY 10 – MARCH 18, 2023
 

Honolulu (January, 2023) –Downtown Art Center presents The Wild, Whimsical World of Bonhui Uy, a humorous and whimsical jungle installation of almost life-sized animals made from large moving-box cardboards by Honolulu artist and architect
Bonhui Uy. His smaller animals are made mostly from recycled materials, including cardboard, boxes, sheet-metal, containers, and wooden crates.

This colorful menagerie of dinosaurs, birds, dogs, cats, tigers, monkeys, porcupines, and hippos will take over the Downtown Art Center Main Exhibition Gallery from February 10 - March 18, 2023, during regular gallery hours from Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The family-friendly installation is designed for everyone, especially for the young and young at heart. The exhibition will also include a retrospective of Uy's work over the last 40+ years, including hand and digital drawings, paintings, collages, lithographs, etchings, and woodcut prints.

A special pop-up shop featuring original works, digital drawing prints in various sizes, collage print postcards, and wearable art by Uy will be featured in the gallery during the exhibition.

EVENTS
The public is invited to an artist’s reception on First Friday, March 3 from 5:30-8 p.m.
In addition, the artist will be giving a
public tour around the gallery on Saturday, March 4 from 2-3 p.m. Admission is FREE, but please RSVP to this special talk story session on Eventbrite.com.

Workshops:
Making Collages with Bonhui Uy Workshop: Saturday, March 18 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; $60 per person, ages 13+, 20 people max. 

Spring Vacation Collage Workshop 1:
Thursday, March 23 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; $60 per person, ages 13+, 52 people max. 

Spring Vacation Collage Workshop 2
: Wednesday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; $60 per person, ages 13+, 52 people max.

About Bonhui Uy
Bonhui Uy is a fine artist, architectural designer, author and illustrator. He was born in the Philippines to Chinese parents, and earned a degree in architecture from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and a Masters Degree from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. He spent decades working as a designer, later as a consultant to various renowned architects in New York, Honolulu, and  Taiwan, including Philip Johnson, I.M. Pei, Edward Larrabee Barnes and David Childs.

In Honolulu, Uy worked for the architectural firm Au, Smith & Haworth, where he helped develop the design of the original Ward Warehouse. He also worked as Principal & Director of Design for Media Five. Uy has had solo exhibitions of his artwork in 1993 at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan; in 2015 at the Xue Xue Foundation, Taiwan; in 2019 at CKS College, Manila; at Chong Hua High School, Davao, Philippines;  in 2000 at the University of Hawaiʻi School of Architecture, Honolulu; and in 2022 at Honolulu Printmakers.

The Queen's Health System Presents Healing Through Art
On View February 15 - April 8, 2023



A special collaboration show between DAC and The Queens Health System, the Healing Through Art Exhibit celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Healing Through Art Program, which gives oncology patients, family members, caregivers, and hospital staff the opportunity to tap into their creativity as they meet the challenges of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
