Held annually since 1967, the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition of traditional and contemporary crafts brings a juror of international reputation to the state of Hawai‘i to jury entries and give public presentations on each island. Accepted artwork will be exhibited at the Downtown Art Center’s Exhibition Space at 1041 Nuʻuanu Ave., Ste. B (Second Floor) from October 23 to November 19, 2021. Gallery hours will be Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will not be a First Friday reception for this show.   The exhibition will be juried by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, a Los Angeles and New York-based curator, writer, and arts administrator of contemporary art and craft, and an Assistant Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York. Ms. Vizcarrondo-Laboy will visit Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi, Kauaʻi, and Oʻahu to jury entries in person and give public presentations.    Hawaiʻi Craftsmen is pleased to give special recognition in this 2021 exhibition to three featured Hawaiʻi-based artists and educators: Mary Babcock, Juvana Soliven and Maya Lea Portner. They will be honored for their commitment to contemporary craft, to the education and growth of the next generation of artists, and for their support of Hawaiʻi Craftsmen.   This year, Hawaiʻi Craftsmen have raised over $10,300 in awards to recognize the exceptional work of Hawaiʻi artists. These 21 awards represent the extraordinary generosity and support of our community.   Juror   Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy (She/Her) is a Los Angeles and New York-based curator, writer, and arts administrator of contemporary art and craft, focusing on ceramics. Her current research investigates the use of humor, cuteness, and leisure in art as protest. Amplifying the voices of artists of color is central to her practice. She serves as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York. Since 2016, she has been an integral part of MAD’s curatorial team, helping to organize over twenty exhibitions. She also oversees MAD’s Burke Prize (est. 2018), a highly-competitive prestigious contemporary craft award. In 2020, Vizcarrondo-Laboy curated Clay Is Just Thick Paint, an exhibition of Jennifer Rochlin’s ceramics for Greenwich House Pottery’s Jane Hartsook Gallery, New York. She also curated Sleight of Hand, which brought together the work of six contemporary artists of color using humor in clay as a tool of resistance, resilience, and healing for the Center for Craft, Asheville, North Carolina, where she was a 2020 Curatorial Fellow. She is currently working on an expanded version of this exhibition for MAD, titled Funk You Too! It is slated to open in the Fall of 2023. Additionally, she is one of the inaugural recipients of the Cultured Magazine x Parker Pen Writer’s Grant. She penned Seriously Cute: Six Artists Harnessing the Power Dichotomy of Cuteness for the occasion. She holds a BA in Art History from the University of Florida with minors in Anthropology and Ceramics and an MA from the Bard Graduate Center, New York, in Decorative Arts, Design History, & Material Culture. Vizcarrondo-Laboy was born and raised in Puerto Rico. https://www.angelikvizcarrondo.com/    Invited Artists   Mary Babcock   Mary Babcock is a visual and performance artist deeply interested in the intersection of art, contemplation and social activism. Influenced by the confluence of Buddhist practice and an appreciation of everyday acts of care, she holds mending as a central theme in her work, both as an actual reparative action and as a metaphor for personal and social change. Mary is currently Professor in Sculpture and Expanded Practices, in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She received her MFA from the University of Arizona, BFA from University of Oregon, Ph. D. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and B.A in Psychology from Cornell University.  https://marybabcock.com/   Juvana Soliven   Juvana Soliven is a visual artist and educator from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. Soliven’s work subverts and utilizes object languages to speak to issues regarding intimacy, labor, and women’s positionality within the patriarchal system.  http://www.juvanasoliven.com   Maya Lea Portner   Maya Lea Portner is an artist and educator in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. She earned a BFA (Sculpture) from Washington University School of Art in St. Louis and an MFA in Art (Fibers) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Maya has exhibited nationally in New York City, San Francisco, and St. Louis, MO. As part of her graduate research, Maya spent time at the Museum of Natural History ‘La Specola’ in Florence, Italy, where her work has since been exhibited. Her sculptures were included in the Holland Paper Biennial of 2008 in Den Haag, The Netherlands. Maya has been artist-in-residence internationally: a Waaw Residency in Senegal in 2015 and at CHHAAP Baroda Printmaking Studio in Gujurat, India, in 2011. Most recently, she participated in the Open Studio Residency 2018 at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. Portner is the 13th recipient of the prestigious Catherine E. B.
