We are happy to welcome Alohi Kai jewelry trunks show this first Friday 6-9 pm. Local guest designer Shera Mercer will be showcasing her oceans inspired creations.

Here is some information:

About 'Alohi Kai

'Alohi Kai is about love of the ocean, and wanting to re-create beautiful things from the sea. It loosely translates from Hawaiian to "ocean brightness" or "brilliant sea"; light is critical to the sea as it not only feeds it, it enables us to see what is there. 'Alohi Kai supports marine life preservation efforts, and are pro-sustainability in our oceans. We also strive to minimize negative impacts on the environment in everything we do and that includes how we run the studio.

Who is 'Alohi Kai?

Shera and Joe Mercer are the scuba-diving team behind 'Alohi Kai. They met while living in the UK and diving in the Maldives, and despite a deep love of the London life, they've given up European chic in favor of returning toShera's hometown, Honolulu - the water is clear and warmhere! Shera designs and creates the jewelry, while Joe navigates dives and helps with the back-end and business essentials.

Working with metal has been a love of Shera's since she was a high school student -- she once spent time in a sheet metal shop to learn how to weld! But working with precious metals is really her interest. Shera is also an underwater photographer - indeed thinking about light and brightness is a photographer's view of the water -- and this is where the design process often begins. She takes photos to examine the subject from different angles. It is thensketched, and carefully carved and sculpted in wax. Sometimes it takes a few iterations to get it right! Wax models are then cast in silver, and some are subsequently made into molds. Every piece is hand-finished at each stage - the process is surprisingly labor-intensive.

‘Alohi Kai values quality, hand-crafted things; it shows in how a piece looks and how feels. Every piece is made with great care, and they believe in using only high quality metals; de-ox sterling silver (a lower tarnish type of sterling silver) for casting, and argentium (another low-tarnish type of sterling that has a beautiful bright color) for the hand-made chains, with gold vermeil upon request.

Lost wax casting: Cast jewelry usually starts out as a piece of wax. A plaster mold is made from the wax model, thenthe wax is burned out in a very hot oven. Finally molten metal is poured in the resulting cavity, cooled, and removed from the plaster. After polishing, a silicone or rubber moldcan be made of the finished piece, which is used to make further wax models.

However, where mass-manufactured designs are limited by what automated production can accommodate, ‘Alohi Kai designs are not. The mold-making process is a trickier for very 3-dimensional pieces. As such, each of our waxmodels are individually inspected and hand-cleaned after coming out of the mold; some designs require additional sculpting. This also means every piece is unique, since eachmust be finished by hand.
