Featured Courtyard Artist for September
Name: Alessandra Jann-Jordan
Company Name: Reverie by Alessandra

How long have you been doing this?
I have been informally making jewelry and specialized handmade cards and libretti (little books) for over 14 years. Reverie by Alessandra opened in 2010 and operates from Honolulu, HI. We specialize in decorative, handcrafted, unique, specialized gifts called libretti, as well as jewelry that include semi-precious stones, crystal elements, and hand blown glass beads among other elements. Each libretto and piece of jewelry represents a distinct dimension of Alessandra's personality and experience, and tailors to the client’s desires, specifications and preferences.

What made you start your business? What inspires your designs?
The Jewelry:
Born and raised in Paris, France, I've always been attuned to an appreciation for elegant, refined and beautiful objects. A plethora of inspiration surrounded me and I absorbed the distinct beauty that was ever present in France and throughout my world travels, which have included to Peru, Mexico, Sicily, Costa Rica, and Cambodia among other places. Beads and jewelry are, of course, found in all cultures. The joy of viewing beautiful hand made beads, such as in Venice, Italy, propelled me to collect pearled treasures from around the world. After having amassed a mini-fortune worth of beads and crystal elements, I started to make jewelry day and night ‘til so much had been spun from my fingers the time had arrived to share these creations with those who found a pleasure in and desire for them. Reverie by Alessandra was born. Reverie is a French term, which means a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream: "I slipped into reverie". The jewelry and libretti I create are the products of and invitations into the fancy of dreams.

The Libretto:
I've also always had an acute attraction to ancient objects. I enjoy the way they inspire the mind to drift in imaginary travel to the people, places, poetry, song, politics and customs of times long past. I studied paleography, the study of ancient hand writings, while studying Medieval Italian Literature at Oxford University, UK, and was privileged to work directly with ancient manuscripts. I was inspired to create my own mini whimsical handmade books, which I call, "libretti." Initially, these were just a pass-time for amusement's sake. Not long into the process I was getting requests from people for personalized custom made books. I started to tailor the design, concept and use of materials to satisfy the specified needs and preferences. I also started to integrate the people's personal items and ephemera for personalization.

The up-cycled, texturized 3-D feel and exclusive, handcrafted, customized and personalized one-of-a-kind gift, which the libretto has evolved into is one that appeals to people's sense of the singular and the irreproducible. The libretto is a little treasure of wonderful beauty and nostalgia. Each libretto has a unique story and evokes a distinctive feel. It is created using a sweeping array of materials I've collected from around the world and comes packaged in an organza satchel or custom made box to match and with corresponding jewelry, on request. The libretto is likely to deeply touch, if not captivate, enchant and infuse the recipient with a sincere sense of gratitude for the exquisite touch of a personalized gift.

If you had advice for any new up-and-coming artists out there what would it be?
“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”
― Vincent van Gogh

Everyday is one to nurture your passion and your dreams, to be encouraged and to, one step at a time, follow, realize and become the dream you envision. Never loose hope in doing what you love for in doing so you express the beauty of your soul, which is, I believe, indispensible to your and other people's happiness. There is encouragement out there and when the blessing comes -- when you are understood and appreciated for what you are doing-- soak in that nectar! Validation is like a mirror that has the potential to reflect light back exponentially and help you grow. If things don't turn out the way you had hoped, remember... "It is better to have hope in the absence of evidence than despair in the absence of evidence." You never know what blessings lie around the corner. Never loose faith in your vision
