HONOLULU, HAWAII- thirtyninehotel announces the sixth installment of its 39 Chambers Artist Residency Program (39 CARP).

Kris Chau presents Tiger Daughter Returns, a site-specific mural installation exploring her memories growing up on Oahu. Chau usually works in a faux innocent drawing style that appropriates the visual language of illustration to explore her own perceptions and desires.

“Growing up in Hawaii and attending public school, I looked at this poster of all the Hawaiian Gods everyday in Hawaiiana class. It had Pele in her 3 forms it had this amazing composition of Hi'iaka in multiple forms and everything was painted so well. When you think about what you do as an adult it has really strong roots in what you were intrigued by as a kid. I spent my whole life both running away and being proud of the fact I was from a tiny Island in the Pacific. But now I am very very very proud to come home after seeing the world and mak
ing art and a career. Hence the title of this show is "Tiger Daughter Returns". I am the daughter of a Tiger Mom, and I am proud to come home as her Tiger Daughter.”

Kris Chau was trained as an illustrator at California College of Arts and Crafts, but considers herself simply a drawer at heart. She has done a wide range of editorial work, murals installations, and work in the fashion industry. Some of her clients include The New York Times, The Seattle Stranger, Urban Outfitters, Foam Magazine, Swindle Magazine, and Free People. She is currently a member of the studio and artist collective Space 1026. She has also exhibited at; Reward Project, Philadelphia, PA, Rowan Morrison Gallery, Oakland California, Fuse Gallery, New York, Museo De La Cuidad Mexico, Mexico, and Think Space Gallery, in Los Angeles California.

About the 39Carp Program: Each year, thirtyninehotel invites artists from outside of Hawaii to create art installations that consider and respond to the mixed-use aspects of the site as a gallery, bar, lounge, and event space. At the root of thirtyninehotel’s mission is art and music. Founded by creative visionaries and actively directed by 21st-century bohemians, thirtyninehotel continues to support the arts by offering preeminent DJs and visual artists the opportunity to experiment with their craft and providing the local arts community with the chance to connect with artists who are practicing and exhibiting their work internationally. The 39 Chambers Artist Residency Program—the only one of its kind that is part of a commercial enterprise—offers recipients airfare, accommodations, transportation, per diem, and stipend for art materials. This sixth residency exhibition, Tiger Daughter Returns showcases the artwork of Kris Chau.

Tiger Daughter Returns was organized by thirtyninehotel owner and gallery curator, Gelareh Khoie.
