KUMU KAHUA THEATRE LAUNCHES
FIRST FRIDAY EVENTS APRIL 1

For the next three months, Hawai‘i's theater holds mini fundraisers packed with fun

WHAT: First Friday at Kumu Kahua Theatre
WHEN: April 1, May 6, June 3, 6-9pm
WHERE: Kumu Kahua Theatre, 46 Merchant St. at Bethel Street
INFO: 536-4441

HONOLULU, HI--To raise funds and reach out to the community, Kumu Kahua Theater is holding a First Friday event in April, May and June. April 1 brings the theme Alchemy Magic Mystery--inspired by the current production, The Holiday of Rain by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl.

Visitors will find a party happening on the theater's lanai--they can get their tarot cards read by Kneubuhl, one of Hawai‘i's most successful, innovative playwrights. The improve group In YO Face will perform Outrageous Fortunes and Wayne Takabayashi will lead a ghost tour. Donations will be accepted for the theatrical fun and shenanigans.

At a time when non-profits are facing the worse financial crisis they have ever seen, Kumu Kahua celebrates its 40th anniversary. Thanks to $70,000 in donations from the community last year, the theater is able to complete its 2010-2011 season, which is stacked with world premieres and commissioned works by its most popular playwrights. The 100-seat playhouse is the state's only theater dedicated to producing plays about life in Hawai‘i at its home base and also on international tours.

About The Holiday of Rain
Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl, winner of the Hawai‘i Award for Literature and the author of The Conversion of Ka‘ahumanu and Ola Nä Iwi, deconstructs one of the world's most popular writers in her latest play, commissioned by Kumu Kahua Theatre. At the Sadie Thompson Inn in Samoa, guests can take part in an unusual experience: a reenactment of W. Somerset Maugham's 1921 short story "Rain." But thanks to a magician's time warp, the real Maugham finds himself on the guest list. Swirling together fantasy, history, humor and drama, Kneubuhl examines Maugham, who was tortured by his sexuality, and his treatment of Polynesians in his work.

The play runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through April 23; and Sundays at 2 p.m. on March 27; April 3, 10, and 17. To purchase tickets, call the theatre box office at (808) 536-4441, Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
