The Mendonca Building's Courtyard is open again for
First Friday in March with a whole new program concept of Pecha Kucha! but it is
being called “Ka Hui: the Gathering” for this
month.
The first Pecha Kucha Night was devised in Tokyo in
February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their
work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening
in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing
its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a
presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's
a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid
pace. See <http://www.pecha-kucha.org>www.pecha-kucha.org for more
information in general.
On First Friday, the Courtyard event aims to highlight
producers working in creative fields that are informed by and impact
communities. Participant's work will reflect the collaborative role of the
community in their creative process.
This evening is being produced by A.K. Forum and
co-produced by CRC to highlight the historic and emerging communities in
Honolulu and Chinatown.
An extra bonus will be local North Shore jewelry artist, Nilma Hunter who discovered her love for jewelry designing about 4 years ago. She quit her job of 12 years in a hotel on the North Shore and dedicated her time to this new love. Self taught and motivated by Phil 4:13, she designs and handcrafts unique ocean inspired pieces with mostly earth friendly silver (reclaimed from old electronic equipment and other resources). She also uses other sustainable mediums such as sea glass and shells found on beaches and Golden Grass (naturally recurring in the central area of Brazil). She also tries to keep the crochet and knit art her mother taught her alive in her jewelry using thin wire to create one of a kind pieces. Nilma enjoys the challenge of custom orders, giving you the opportunity to design your own piece. Her most popular item is her inspirational words stamped discs, which are also customizable. Finger printing on silver is a great way to keep your loved ones near your heart, stop by her table to check it out!
If you have missed the Luscious Lanikai Jams & Jellies by Tina Young, they are back for the One Night Stand. Get them early for the best selection: mango, lilikoi, guava to name a few.

Otis
Schaper will be providing his usual mix of contemporary and popular
guitar styling will be provided in his usual place after several months of
Hawaiian music. You may have heard him play with The Strangers at
Jimmy Buffet's in Waikiki or the Pipeline Cafe. His wife, Jules
Schaper, will be hanging her latest works on the brick. Her
paintings are primarily of a Hawaiian theme and give the appearance of batik on
rice paper. Additional work of hers can be seen on
Printscapes.com.
“Resident artists” KRIS GOTO and CHEYNE GALLARDE will be upstairs in the Chinatown Artist Lofts, and will have their studios open for a look at their newest creations. Don’t forget to go upstairs!

chicken, he has a veggie version as well.
