Island Soul/Jazz + Raku Poetry in Chinatown

Three local artists will be joining the band Mango Season for a First Friday (Dec. 3) evening of pottery, giclee prints and music in The Hawaii Times Building (928 Nu’uanu Ave.)

Mango Season, plays local favorites, 70’s covers and original compositions. The band includes Curtis and Annie Kamiya and Matt Snow. The First Friday gallery show opens at around 5 p.m. Mango Season will play from 8-10 p.m. There’s no cover charge. Sake will be available for a donation to the artists.

Larak “Raki” Briscoe, Ramon Camarillo and Yuri Farrant are the artists.

Raki is a potter local to Hawaii for 5 years that creates a unique collection of ceramic art that is fired using a process that derives from ancient Japan known as raku. Raki creates a wide array of design shapes that attain a mirror-like finish and metallic sheen. His works range from smaller pieces that could be used as decoration for an office environment or cubicle, to larger forms, such as 2-foot vases that really stretch the malleability of the media. Most are works of art for display as well as practical use. Raki’s Website, www.EarthHandFire.com is under construction.

Ramon is a world-renown potter who throws raku pots up to 32 inches in height that defy the typical limitations of clay in size and thickness. Originally from Hawaii, he gained recognition as a ceramic artist while based in Virginia for several year and led a raku workshop last year at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh.

Yuri is an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer (2002) and photographer who does made-to-order, high-quality, signed giclee prints, from 11-by-14-inch to 35-foot works on stretched canvas. Most of his prints are museum-grade on archival canvas paper made with state-of-the-art techniques. His works are featured at www.yurifarrant.com.

The combined performance and gallery show is the first of its kind for these artists and musicians.
