On First Friday, November 5, 2010 from 6 to 9 pm, the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM) present “World Beat” Live from the Lawn featuring a line-up of percussion musicians. Headlining the evening are Taiko Center of the Pacific, Soul Revival Sound System, Te Lumanaki o Tokelau, Babasango and Balinese Dance by Desiree Seguritan. Michael Tanenbaum with Stephen Foster and Randy Wheeler and the Kolintang Ensemble will present their collaborations Live from the Lanai from 6:30 - 9 pm.

Taiko Center of the Pacific is a school of traditional and contemporary Japanese drumming established in 1994 by Kenny and Chizuko Endo to preserve traditional Japanese drumming and to create new music for Taiko.

Formed in November 2009, the multicultural roots of Soul Revival Sound System is a key component of Taiko Tatsumaki Soul Revival Sound System their unique and evolving take on music, combining influences of rocksteady, reggae, ska, funk, jazz, rock, and world music into a creative and energy filled musical experience.

Te Lumanaki o Tokelau I Amelika is a school of Tokelau language, culture, and performance arts, led by artistic directors Mas and Bonnie Patelesio. This talented group of dancers returned triumphant from winning the cup at the Po Fatele competition at the Tokelau Festival in New Zealand.

Sango is Russell Robertson II, a master conga drummer and percussionist, who has performed, studied and taught in Hawaii and New York for more than 20 years. Robertson is the founder of the dance company, Liberation Ensemble.

Michael Tanenbaum is an instrumental guitartist who is originally from Toronto but moved to Hawaii in 1991. Inspired by Hawaii’s Slack key guitar music, over time he has incorporated his northern music roots with the tranquility and beauty of his new home in a fusion he calls, “Celtic slack key.” Michael plays on the Lanai with musicians Steven Foster on Hammered Dulcimer, and Randy Wheeler on the Saxophone.

The Mahalohalo Kolintang Ensemble will bring us yet another form of kettle gong music. Kolintang is specific to southern Philippine and Malay cultures, and is named for the central instrument of eight horizontally-laid kettle gongs in dynamic musical conversation.

The galleries of the Hawaii State Art Museum will be open during the event, as well as Downtown@HiSAM, and the Museum shop, Hawaii Showcase Productions. Food vendors on the Lawn include: Bombay India Restaurant, Le Crepe Café, Land of Organica and Kettle Corn Hawaii. Produced by Tim Bostock Productions, for the Friends of the Hawaii State Art Museum and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, with support from the LEF Foundation and DBEDT.
