The Mendonca Building's unique Courtyard is open again
for First Friday in November and featuring some artists new to the Courtyard and
some old friends as well.
New to the Courtyard is EVELYN NEIHAUS who will
assist you to rediscover the intense color of our Hawaii! From her personal
interpretation of the islands, Evelyn paints a palette of multiform using a
surprising integration of feathers, seeds, nests and other natural pieces.
Her intricate use of form, subject and color teases and tantalizes art
enthusiasts. Evelyn comes from a large Ohana of artists where she nurtured her
passion for painting among folks sharing their distinctive styles.
JULIE BONK, best known as LALA B, makes the most
remarkable earrings from Koa wood. Her designs range from unique
and chic to organic and casual. She invites you to come find the style
that was grown, picked and made for you."
Also new are Ann and Peter Gommers from Kailua.
ANN GOMMERS prefers to paint 'plein air'.
In her paintings, she seeks to capture dreams juxtaposed to reality. "A
momentous sky can appear in a moment and be gone...only captured in the memory,
but that image may be thought about again and again while carrying on the most
mundane activities of daily life. In my painting, I seek to capture those
moments."
Ann holds a BFA from the University of
Denver and has studied art at the University of Copenhagen and the Rhode Island
School of Design. Landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes and portraiture hold her
interest. In addition, she doesn't shy away from using her work to bring a
political message. Oil is her favorite medium, but she also uses acrylic and
mixed media, such as oil mixed with textiles and pastels.
PETER
GOMMERS creates fine art photographs, portraits
and product photographs. His photographs are of specific themes and landscapes
found in Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Mexico, Japan and other
locations.
Where we often see our local RUST as something to get
rid of, Peter captures the beauty of it in many different forms and locations.
Peter's first work was a series of photographs of the Petroglyphs
located in Maine. There are over 500 petroglyphs at nine sites in Machias Bay.
All were made between 380 and 3,000 years ago. Seasonal gatherings involving
more than one hundred canoes were common in that area. He also photographed a
series about the building of a Birch bark
canoe.
The complexity and beauty of the Hawaiian landscape and
culture are unique in the nation and the world. The Gommers have
collaborated this year on a joint show, named "Island
Light: Through Lens and Brush". Peter's photographs and
Ann's paintings capture lovely moments when the special light of the islands and
its people are revealed through his photographic lens and through her
painter’s brush.
MARTINE ACEVES FOSTER will return with her
exquisite photos of flowers as people rarely pause to experience them. She will
also have images of people and places encountered in her travels. Images which
invite viewers to weave a narrative about where the people are, what has brought
them there and where they are headed. Raised by her mother to look at the world
through “finger frames," the camera became a natural extension of her way
of viewing her surroundings as well as a method to record and communicate her
perceptions. After pursuing photography mostly on her own, Aceves-Foster’s
work first debuted at the Artists of Hawaii 2007 exhibition at the Honolulu
Academy of Arts.
Also returning will be ALESSANDRA
JANN-JORDAN who was born and raised in Paris, France. World travelled
and educated, she received her Bachelors in Anthropology/Sociology and
Italian from Middlebury College in Vermont, and obtained two Masters
from Oxford University, in England; in Medieval Italian Literature and Social
Work. Currently, she is a practicing Social Worker for Catholic Charities Hawaii
and uses her jewelry and card making business as a therapeutic and creative
release. Every jewelry design is hand made using semi precious stones, fresh
water pearls, Swarovski crystallized elements, vintage coral, a variety of
metals, and hand glass blown beads - all collected from the designer’s
travels around the world.
Her cards are made from layers of beautiful
designed and hand crafted papers, originating from countries as Korea,
France and Italy. The cards are one of a kind and irreproducible, as the vintage
elements used to decorate them are unique, recycled and
sometimes, antique. Both jewelry and cards can be custom made and
tailored to the client's specifications for such events as weddings, birthdays
and anniversaries
Artists KRIS GOTO, SEAN
GALLAGHER & AMBER CHESBRO who are upstairs in the recently
renovated Artist Lofts, will also have their studios open for an early look at
their new creations. Amber just won the Frances Pickens Award of Excellence
for Metal with her piece, Abacus for an Anorexic.
FRED GAYAGAS will return with his
unique blend of Hawaiian and contemporary music, drawing you into the magic that
is the “One Night Stand”. He welcomes you to join him in
sing-along or impromptu hula. Enter into the Chinatown Courtyard on Smith
Street through the stand of bamboo at the Blue Dragon Gate or from the Maunakea
Street doors. This event is free and open to the public.
Elgin Onag will be making Kabobs in the Courtyard on his portable wagon. There will be beef, shrimp, pork & veggie kabobs for a very reasonable price
